Description A collection of programmes and wordbooks for 19 concerts given at St. James’s Hall, London, between 1882 and 1904, arranged chronologically in a single volume.

28 April 1882: Handel, Solomon, being the final performance of the season given by the Sacred Harmonic Society, with Mr Willing (organ), conducted by Sir Michael Costa (with a historical introduction and a list of the orchestral ensemble).

7 February 1899: Violin Recital, given by Carl Heinzen with the assistance of Ernest Sharpe (vocal) and Mr C. Wilson (piano), including the first London performance of Dvorak, Sonatine in G (op.100) for violin and piano (with historical notes by Edgar F. Jacques).

13 and 19 June 1899: Vocal Recitals, given by Herr Eugen Gura, including lieder by Carl Loewe, Schubert and Schumann, conducted by Mr Carl Armbruster (prospectus plus separate programme for the first concert).

15 November 1899: Herr Anton van Rooy’s Song Recital, with Carl Friedberg (piano).

27 November 1899: Miss Nora Clench (violin), with Mr Plunket Greene (vocal), led by Arthur C. Bent and conducted by C. Villiers Stanford.

28 January [1890]: Recital of Slav and German Lieder, by Monsieur Bogimir Oumiroff, with Mademoiselle Ella Správka (piano), including the first London performances of songs by Zdenko Fibich and Fr. Picka (with biographical note and photograph of Oumiroff).

25 June [1889/95]: Miss Marguerite Macintyre’s Grand Evening Concert, with Miss Rosa Olitzka, Mr Gregory Hast, Mr Kelley Cole and Mr Edward Iles (vocal), Miss Marian Jay (violin) and Herr Rudolf Zwintscher (piano), conducted by Hermann Grünebaum and Theodore Flint (with handwritten annotations commenting on the standard of the performance and recording the provision of encores).

26 February [1891]: Orchestral Concert, given to mark the re-appearance in England of Jean Gerardy (cello), with Eleanor Cleaver (vocal), conducted by Monsieur Ysaye (with transcriptions of press cuttings relating to recent concerts given by Gerardy in Berlin).

10 March 1903: Francis Harford’s Third Recital, given with the assistance of Miss Nora Clench (violin) and Mr Philip L. Agnew (piano), accompanied by Miss Barbara Verne, including the first performance of songs by R. Vaughan Williams, Eric Chapman, Cecil Forsyth, Nicholas Gatty and H.F. Birch Reynardson.

14 May [1904]: Vocal Recital given by Miss Evangeline Florence and Mr Gregory Hast.

26 May 1903: Vocal and Violin Recital given by Dr Theo. Lierhammer and Franz Ondricek with Felix Weingartner (piano), accompanied by Heer Coenraad van Bos, including the first performance of Weingartner, Ballad ‘The Pilgrimage to Kevlaar’.

28 May [1903]: Historical Vocal Recital, given by Madame Marcella Lindh with Mr Richard Humphries (cello), accompanied by Mr Oscar Dienzl (with a photograph of Lindh and transcriptions of a selection of continental press cuttings relating to her performances).

22 June 1903: Miss Polyxena Fletcher’s Orchestral Concert, with Madame Eleanor Cleaver (vocal) and the Queen’s Hall Orchestra, conducted by Henry Wood, including concertante pieces for piano by Brahms and Liszt and the first English performance of Rimsky-Korsakov, Piano Concerto in C sharp minor, op, 30.

23 June [1903]: Miss Marie Hall’s Violin Recital, with Gottfried Galston (piano) and Mrs Henry J. Wood (vocal), including the first performance of Percy Pitt, Perfume, accompanied by Henry Bird.

26 June 1903: Monsieur Joseph Lhévinne Pianoforte Recital, with Mrs Henry J. Wood and Monsieur Louis Arens (vocal), accompanied by Mr Henry J. Wood, including Russian folksongs sung in English.

6 November [1903]: Mr Francis Macmillen’s Orchestral Concert, with Mrs Henry J. Wood (accompanied by Mr Haddon Squire) and the Queen’s Hall Orchestra, conducted by Henry Wood (with words, historical notes and a photograph of Francis Macmillen).

11 December 1903: Vocal and Pianoforte Recital, given by Madame Schumann-Heink and Mr Benno Schönberger.

25 May 1904: Mr Joseph Ivimey’s Amateur Orchestral Society Grand Evening Concert, with Mrs Henry J. Wood (vocal), Miss Ella Ivimey (violin) and Mr Henry J. Wood (piano), conducted by Ivimey, including the first London performance of a set of songs by Felix Weingartner (with a list of the orchestral ensemble).
