Description
A programme for Two Grand Musical Performances, given on 25 and 27 March 1858 to mark the opening of St. James's Hall, London, and for the benefit of the Middlesex Hospital.
This document begins with a list of the Royal and Lady Patrons for the concert and a statement regarding the Middlesex Hospital. It also carries a brief statement regarding the Hall, information regarding ticket arrangements, and a list of the complete orchestral ensemble, led by Messrs Sainton and H. Blagrove.
The performances were both two-part vocal concerts, with a range of vocal soloists (see below) and the Vocal Association (of 300 voices), under the direction of Mr Julius Benedict. The second concert also featured some orchestral and instrumental pieces.
25 March 1858: Mendelssohn, Lobgesang and a miscellaneous act, given by Miss Dolby, Miss Stabbach, Madame Rudersdorff, Madame Weiss, Mr Lockey, Mr Santley, Mr Montem Smith and Mr Thomas (vocal).
27 March 1858: including Mendelssohn, The Music to Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream and the first performances of Meyerbeer, Part-Song for Eight Voices, 'This House to love is holy' and Molique, Fandango, Violin, with Orchestral Accompaniments (performed by the composer). Also, orchestral overtures to each part and instrumental solos by Arabella Goddard (piano) and Signor Piatti (cello). The vocal/choral pieces were given by Miss Dolby, Miss Kemble, Madame Borchart, Madame Sherrington Lemmens, Herr Deck, Signor Luchesi, Mr Santley, Mr Montem Smith and Mr Weiss, with Henry Smart (organ).
