Description A collection of programmes and wordbooks for seven concerts given at St. James’s Hall, London between 1879 and 1889, held with programmes for a single performance at the Town Hall, Popular (1884) and for two concerts at the Prince’s Hall, Piccadilly (1889 and 1891).

1. St James’s Hall
26 April 1879: New Philharmonic Concerts (28th season no.1), with Mademoiselle Augusta Schou (vocal), Herr Straus (viola) and Charles Hallé (piano), conducted by Wilhelm Ganz, including Berlioz, Harold in Italy and Beethoven, Piano Concerto No.5 (with analytical programme notes, including musical examples, by W.A. Barrett and a list of the orchestral ensemble).
2 December 1879: Herr Henschel’s Choral and Orchestral Concert, with Lillian Bailey, Frank Boyle, Frederic King and Herr Henschel (vocal) and Mr Oliver King (organ), conducted by Mr Barnby and Herr Henschel, including the first English performances of Henschel, Out of Darkness and Brahms, Triumphlied (with analytical notes by Joseph Bennett, including musical examples).
10 March 1883: London Musical Society, with Madame Howitz, Madame Isabel Fassett, Mr Cummings and Mr Frederic King (vocal), Max Laistner (piano) and Mr W. Hodge (organ), conducted by Mr Barnby, including the first English performance of Dvorak, Stabat Mater.
24 May 1887: London Musical Society, with Miss Carlotta Elliot, Miss Florence Perugini, Miss Lena Little, Miss Pfeiffer von Bèek, Mr Harper Kearton, Mr L. Munday, Mr Henry Cross and Mr W. H. Brereton (vocal) and Signor Buonamici (piano), conducted by Dr A.C. Mackenzie, including a symphony by Ebenezer Prout and the first English performance of Beethoven, Cantata on the Death of Joseph the Second (with brief historical notes and a list of the works previously performed by the London Musical Society, including a large number of first performances).
26 February 1889: Novello Oratorio Concert, including Saint-Saens, The 19th Psalm, and the first London performance of A.C. Mackenzie, The Dream of Jubal (with historical and analytical notes, including musical examples).
19 March 1889: Novello Oratorio Concert, including the first London performance of Dudley Buck, The Light of Asia (with analytical notes, including musical examples).
25 June 1889: Mr L. Emil Bach’s Grand Evening Concert, with Madame Sembrich and Miss Lena Little (vocal), Monsieur J. Hollmann (cello) and Herr L. Emil Bach (piano), conducted by W.G. Cusins, including the first English performances of extracts from Goring Thomas, Nadeshda and the first performance of L. Emil Bach, Piano Concerto in C minor.


2. Town Hall, Poplar
18 October 1884: People’s Concert Society (seventh season no.1), with Herr Emil Mahr (violin), Otto Leu (cello) and Herr Heydrich (piano) (programme and wordbook).


3. Prince’s Hall, Piccadilly
21 May 1889: Miss Alice Gomes’ Evening Concert, with Madame Bertha Moore, Miss Alice Gomes, Madame Belle Cole, Mr Henry Piercy, Mr Herbert Thorndike and Mr Plunket Greene (vocal), Mademoiselle Jeanne Douste (piano) and Miss Nettie Carpenter (violin), conducted by Mr T. Henry Webb and Mr Wilfred Bendall (with brief handwritten annotations commenting on the standard of the performance and indicating the performance of encores).
27 April 1891: Concert of Ancient English Music of the 16th and 17th Centuries, performed on period instruments under the direction of Arnold Dolmetsch (with introductory and historical notes by Dolmetsch).
