Description
A collection of programmes and wordbooks for five concerts given between 5 and 9 October 1908 as part of the Sheffield Triennial Musical Festival, arranged chronologically in a bound volume.
Each programme begins with a list of the Patrons and Officers for the Festival and carries lists of the choral and orchestral ensembles. There is also a record of the following solo performers:
Vocal: Miss Perceval Allen, Madame Agnes Nicholls, Miss Eva Rich, Madame De Vere Sapio, Miss Jenny Taggart and Mrs Henry J. Wood; Miss Jessie Goldsack, Madame Kirkby Lunn, Miss Gwladys Roberts and Miss Edna Thornton; Mr Lloyd Chandos, Mr Webster Millar and Mr Felix Senius; Mr Frederick Austin, Mr Dalton Baker, Mr Herbert Brown, Mr Robert Charlesworth, Mr Francis Harford, Mr Joseph Lycett and Mr Herbert Witherspoon.
Instrumental: Madame Teresa Carreño (piano) and Mr Fritz Kreisler (violin) with J.W. Phillips (organ).
The concerts were given by the Queen's Hall Orchestra, led by Maurice Sons and conducted by Henry J. Wood, with a voluntary chorus of over 300 voices and a choir of 50 boys' voice, directed by Mr Henry Coward.
The programmes also record the involvement of several local artists: Mrs J.A. White, Mrs J.W. Ibberson, Miss Amy Skerritt, Mr A.S. Burrows, Mr Wm. Burrows, Mr T.W. Green, Mr A.E. Hobson, Mr J.A. Elston and Mr Wm Nichols (vocal).
All programmes, except that for the concert given on the morning of 9 October, contain notes by J.A. Rodgers. In the case of the concert on 5 October, these are purely historical. For all other concerts, they are also analytical and contain musical examples. The programme for the performance of the Bach, St Matthew Passions includes historical notes by Rosa Newmarch, who also provides notes for the performance of Rimsky-Korsakov given on 8 October.
5 October 1908 (evening): Mendelssohn, Elijah.
6 October 1908 (morning): Franck, The Beatitudes; Tchaikovsky, Concerto for Pianoforte and Orchestra No. 1; and Berlioz, Te Deum, op.22 (Felix Senius, solo tenor).
7 October 1908 (evening): H. Walford Davies, Cantata 'Everyman', and miscellaneous items, including the first English performance of Delius, Sea Drift, for baritone solo, chorus and orchestra (Frederic Austin, baritone). The concert also included solo violin music by J.S. Bach and Richard Strauss, Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks.
8 October 1908 (morning): Debussy, Cantata 'L'Enfant Prodigue' (first English performance) and Rimsky-Korsakov, Suite from the Opera 'The Eve of Christmas' (first English performance with chorus and orchestra), given by Madame Kirkby Lunn (alto) and Mr Francis Harford (bass). The concert also included Mozart, Symphony No.35 in D ('Haffner') and selections from Act III of Wagner, Die Meistersinger and Verdi, Requiem.
9 October 1908 (morning): J.S Bach, St Matthew Passion (with a separate list of the instrumentalists used to form the orchestral ensemble).
9 October 1908 (evening): Beethoven, Symphony No.9, preceded by a miscellaneous act of items for choral ensemble.
