Collection name Sheffield Musical Festival (1899-1905)

Description Programmes and wordbooks for the Sheffield Musical Festivals of 1899, 1902 and 1905, held as three bound volumes. These programmes are number chronologically from 1490-1505.

Each Festival consisted of three morning and three evening performances, conducted by August Manns (1899), Henry Wood (1902) and Felix Weingartner (1905).

All programmes begin with a list of the Patrons and Officers of the Festival and with lists of the choral and orchestral ensembles. There is also an indication of the vocal and instrumental soloists engaged (see below). All programmes carry historical and analytical notes, the majority with musical examples.


Volume 1: 11-13 October 1899
Madame Ella Russell, Miss Alice Esty and Miss Lillian Coomber (soprano), Madame Marie Brema (mezzo), Miss Clara Butt, Miss Jessie King and Madame Burrell (alto), Mr Edward Lloyd, Mr Ben Davies and Mr William Green (tenor), Mr David Bispham (baritone) and Mr Andrew Black and Mr Charles Knowles (bass) and Frederick Dawson (piano), with the Crystal Palace Orchestra.

11 October: Handel, Messiah.
12 October: Handel, Samson and Delilah, and miscellaneous.
13 October: Parry, King Saul.

Evening
11 October: Elgar, Scenes from the Saga of King Olaf (conducted by the composer).
12 October: Sullivan, Golden Legend and Beethoven, Choral Symphony.
13 October: Mendelssohn, Hymn of Praise and miscellaneous.


Volume 2: 1-3 October 1902

Morning
1 October: Mendelssohn, Elijah.
2 October: including Elgar, Dream of Gerontius and Coronation Ode, both conducted by the composer.
3 October: Dvorak, Stabat Mater. Also, S. Coleridge Taylor, Meg Blane (a Cantata, composed specially for the Festival and conducted by the composer).

Evening
1 October: including Henry Coward, Gareth and Linet (a Musical Romance, composed specially for the Festival and conducted by the composer).
2 October: including the first English performances of Richard Strauss, Wanderer’s Storm Song and Two Songs for Baritone and Orchestra (op. 33). Also, F. H. Cowen, Ode to the Passions (conducted by the composer) and selections from Handel, Israel in Egypt.
3 October: including the first English performance of Peter Cornelius, Duet from the Unfinished Opera 'Gunlöd' and Parry, Blest Pair of Sirens (conducted by the composer).


Volume 3: 4-6 October 1905
This volume is missing the programme for the third evening concert.

Collections Overview The Gerald Coke Handel Collection is an internationally important collection of material relating to Handel and his contemporaries, including manuscripts, printed books and music, libretti, paintings and engravings, memorabilia, art works and ephemera. The Handel collection is open for research Wednesday-Friday, and the display room (with access to recorded music) is open with the rest of the museum Tuesday-Sunday 10-6.
