Description
A miscellaneous collection of programmes with words for Selections of Sacred Music given at various church venues in Birmingham between 1823 and 1834, arranged chronologically within a bound volume.
Also, a handbill for the Consecration of Saint Peter’s Church on 10 August 1827 and an undated wordbook for a Venite, Exultemus Domino and other psalms, held as tracts 14 and 24 of the same volume.
Unless otherwise noted below, each programme covers the music for two services given on the date stated and provides an indication of who provided the sermon for the events.
Certain of these programmes begin with a list of the vocal soloists engaged. Where the names of vocal performers appear in square brackets below, this information is derived from the wordbook only.
24 August 1823, Catholic Chapel, Shadwell Street: Miss Hammersley, Mrs Waylett, Miss Roberts, Mr Heaton, Mr Aston and Mr Thorne (vocal), led by Mr Shargool with Mr W.H. Sharman (piano) (with a list of the principal instrumental performers) [1].

10 September 1826, Legge Street Chapel: 'A Band will be full and complete, and the orchestra will consist of upwards of fifty performers', directed by Mr Moreton [8].
24 December 1826, Zion Chapel, Newhall Street: Mrs Eden, Mr Best and Mr Kenworthy (vocal), directed by Mr J. Moreton. 'The orchestra will be complete, and consist of upwards of forty performers' [9].
18 February 1827, Legge-Street Chapel: 'The Band will be full and more complete than on the last Occasion, and the Orchestra will consist of upwards of Fifty Performers', directed by Mr. J. Moreton. These are separate documents, covering the Afternoon and Evening performances [10/11].
