Description A collection of 9 volumes, 1 envelope and 4 individual documents comprising the archives of Dr Marian Ursula Arkwright (c.1863–1922), acquired by deposits in November 1990 and June 1992.

Arkwright was the first woman to receive a Mus. Bac. degree from Durham University and later obtained a Mus. Doc. from the same institution. She was actively involved in a wide variety of amateur music making, as instrumentalist, singer, accompanist, conductor and composer. Her musical life was largely based in the Newbury area, although she also participated in concerts given in other parts of the country, including those of the English Ladies' Orchestral Society.

The scrapbooks contain programmes, cuttings, photographs and other ephemera relating to musical events in which she was involved. Also held is an Illustrated History of the Newbury Amateur Orchestral Union.
