Description
Programme with words for a concert given in aid of the Royal Society of Female Musicians (est. 1839) on 13 June 1856 at Her Majesty’s Concert Room, Hanover Square.
This was a two-part concert, consisting largely of solo and small-ensemble English and Italian vocal music, with some instrumental solos and orchestral pieces to open and close.
The programme lists the following performers, all of whom appeared for no fee:
Madame Clara Novello, Madame Rudersdorff, Mademoiselle Emilie Krall and Madame Viardot Garcia; Mrs Lockey, Miss Birch and Miss Dolby; Monsieur Gassier, Mr Benson, Mr Lawler and Signor Marras (vocal), with glees to be sung by Messrs Foster, Benson, Land and Lawler.
Madame Clara Schumann and William Sterndale Bennett (piano), Herr Nabich (trombone) and Signor Giulio Regondi (concertina).
The orchestra is described as 'numerous and complete', led by Mr. H. Blagrove and conducted by William Sterndale Bennett.
The document opens with a list of Patrons of the Society and closes with a list of the Honorary Subscribers and Benefactors (including an indication of the amounts paid by each). There is also a brief introductory statement regarding the Society and its subscription arrangements.
There is a single handwritten annotation describing Clara Schumann’s performance of Mendelssohn, Concerto in G minor as ‘so beautiful’.
