Description
A collection of programmes and wordbooks for seven concerts given at the Queen's Hall, Langham Place, London in 1895 and 1896, arranged chronologically as a single bound volume.
Note: this volume also contains material relating to the British Chamber Music Concerts seasons 1 and 2 (eight concerts, 1894-95), which are described in more detail in the entry: British Chamber Music Concerts (1894-95).
9 March 1895: London Ballad Concerts (29th season, no.12), being a two-part concert of British vocal music given by Mrs Helen Trust, Miss Dale, Madame Belle Cole, Miss Clara Butt, Mr Edward Lloyd, Mr Jack Robertson, Mr Maybrick, Mr Arthur Barlow and Mr Richard Green (vocal) with Mr Eaton Faning's Select Choir, Miss Cécile Elieson (violin) and Mr Julian Pascal (piano), accompanied by Mr Waddington Cooke.
6 November 1895: London Ballad Concerts (30th season no.1), with Miss Ada Crossley, Mr Edward Lloyd, Madame Belle Cole, Mr Plunket Greene, Miss Rina Allerton, Mr Douglas Powell, Miss Clara Butt, Mr Herbert Grover and Miss Margaret Macintyre (vocal), with W. H. Squire (cello) and the Dilettante Vocal Quartett (Mr James A. Brown, Mr Edward Dalzell, Mr Frederick Bevan and Mr Robert Hilton) (with a number of handwritten annotations regarding the provision of encores).
2 February [1895]: Sunday Afternoon Orchestral Concert, featuring Miss Alice Esty (vocal), Madame Esperanza Kisch-Schorr (piano) and Mr Howard Reynolds (cornet), led by W. Frye Parker and conducted by Albert Randegger (with historical and analytical notes by Edgar F. Jacques, a list of the orchestral ensemble and numerous press cuttings regarding the fourth concert in the series, held on 22 January).
4 May 1895: Royal Amateur Orchestral Society (23rd season no.3), with Miss Esther Palliser and Mr Henry Piercy (vocal, the former replaced by Emily Squire) and Miss Eleanor Davis (piano), accompanied by Signor Li Calsi and conducted by George Mount (with historical notes, a list of the orchestral ensemble and a list of the patrons/members of the Society).
29 June [1895]: Grand Evening Concert, given by the Countess of Radnor in aid of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, with Miss Marie Brema, Monsieur Bonnard, Mr Byard, Miss Maude Valerie White, Mr Henry Bird and Mr J. Munro Coward (vocal), including an improvised organ prelude by Mr J. Munro Coward, conducted by the Countess of Radnor (with lists of the choral and orchestral ensembles, which consisted entirely of female performers).
1 November 1895: Complimentary Farewell Concert given for Madame Antoinette Sterling, with Mrs Mary Davies, Miss Edith Miller, Miss Hughes, Madame Clara Samuell, Madame Hope Glenn, Madame Antoinette Sterling, Mr Orlando Harley and Mr Dudley Buck, Jun (vocal), Miss Janotha, Miss Marie Dubois and Madame Burmeister Petersen (piano), Mr Arnold Dolmetsch (viola d'Amore), Miss Helene Dolmetsch (Viola de Gamba), and Mrs Elodie Dolmetsch (harpsichord), accompanied by Mr Fountain Meen and Mr Maunder (with a photograph of Antoinette Sterling).
4 March 1896: Vocal and Pianoforte Recital, given by Miss Marie Busch and Madame Else Mathis, with the assistance of Gertrude Sichel (vocal), accompanied by Mrs Henkel.
