Description
Analytical programmes for sixteen performances organized by Mr Robert Newman and held at the Queen’s Hall between 1898 and 1900.
1. Orchestral concerts (13 concerts)
These were two-part concerts given by the Queen’s Hall Orchestra, led by Arthur W. Payne and conducted by Henry J. Wood, with Percy Pitt as accompanist.
All programmes provide a full list of the orchestral ensemble and carry historical and analytical notes by Edgar F. Jacques. These include musical examples and texts for any vocal pieces.
A number of these documents also include advertisements, with programmes, for other concerts given at the Queen’s Hall.
15 June 1898: Tchaikovsky Concert, with Miss Clara Butt (vocal) and Madame Carreno (piano), including the first English performance of Tchaikovsky, Overture Triomphale in D, op.15. Also, vocal solos.
14 June 1899: Tchaikovsky Concert, with Miss Lillian Blauvelt (vocal) and Madame Carreno (piano).
7 November [1898]: Wagner Concert, with vocalist Mr Philip Brozel, including vocal and orchestral operatic extracts by Wagner, plus Beethoven, Symphony no. 3.
10 June 1899: Wagner Concert, with Miss Lillian Blauvelt, Miss Helen Jaxon, Miss Kirby Lunn and Mr David Bispham (vocal). Wagnerian operatic excerpts including the Introduction and Scene 1 of Das Rheingold, performed in German.
13 November [1899]: Wagner Concert, with Madame Ella Russell and Mr Ellison van Hoose (vocal). Wagnerian operatic excerpts plus Beethoven, Symphony No. 5.
4 December [1899]: Wagner concert, with Miss Lillian Blauvelt and Mr Louis Frolich (vocal). Wagnerian operatic excerpts plus Beethoven, Symphony No. 8.
30 May [1899]: First Ysaye Concert, including concertante violin music by Bach, Mozart, and Joachim performed by Ysaye.
12 June [1899]: Second Ysaye Concert, with Miss Lillian Blauvelt (vocal) and Herr B. Schonberger (piano).
17 June [1899]: Third Ysaye Concert, including concertante violin music by Lalo and Bruch and the first English performance of Chausson, Poéme, with Ysaye (violin).
17 May [1900]: First Ysaye Concert, including the first English performance of an Allegro in D, for strings, oboes and horns, taken from the last movement of an unfinished symphony by Mozart.
31 May 1900: Third and last Ysaye concert, including the first London performances of Chausson, Symphonic Poem ‘Viviane’ and Rimsky-Korsakoff, Fantaisie Russe for Solo Violin and Orchestra.
13 December 1899: Robert Newman’s Testimonial Concert.
13 April 1900: Grand Orchestral Concert given by the Sunday Concert Society, with Madame Blanche Marchesi (vocal), including much music by Wagner and Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 6.
2. Recitals (three concerts)
These were two-part concerts of vocal and instrumental solos, accompanied by Percy Pitt.
21 November [1900]: Ysaye Recital, with Mons. Ysaye (violin), Signor Busoni (piano) and Madame Kirby Lunn (vocal).
4 July 1899: Miss Lillian Blauvelt’s Vocal Recital, with Monsieur Ysaye (violin).
27 June [1900]: Madame Lillian Blauvelt’s Farewell Concert, previous to her Concert Tour in America, with Madame Blauvelt, Monsieur Ysaye, and Signor Busoni, with Mr Manuel Gomez (clarinet obbligato).
