Description A souvenir programme relating to performances of Henry Purcell, Dido and Aeneas, given by the Purcell Operatic Society (est. 1899) in May 1900 and March 1901.

This document begins with a historical Foreword by J.A. Fuller-Maitland and includes a full list of the chorus members, information regarding some of the production team (including Martin Fallas Shaw, musical director), a break-down of the scenes and a brief synopsis of the plot ('The Argument'). There are also illustrations of some of the principal characters and of certain aspects of staging. One illustration of the latter is marked ‘as at Hampstead 1900’.

There is also material relating to The Masque of Love, from the opera Dioclesian, by the same composer. This is accompanied by a historical note on the concept of Masque, a scene break-down and plot synopsis, and illustrations from various scenes.
