Description
A collection of programmes and wordbooks for Selections of Sacred Music given at various London churches between 1822 and 1827, held as a single bound volume, with MS notes by Sir George Smart.
Each concert was given for the benefit of a local organization/institution and the programmes include printed information regarding that body: the first two programmes include historical/contextual notes whilst the third and fourth carry lists of the organizers and supporters of the concert.
Each concert was in two parts, typically consisted of selections from Handel, The Messiah and Haydn, The Creation.
Each programme provides an indication of the vocal soloists engaged (see below) and includes a list the instrumental performers. All concerts were conducted by Sir George Smart and were given with the assistance of the choristers from the Chapel Royal and (with the exception of that in 1826) St. Paul's Cathedral.
