Description A miscellaneous collection of handbills and programmes for performances given under the auspices of the Oxford Orchestral Society between 1888 and 1897, including programmes for four Grand Orchestral Concerts given at the Sheldonian Theatre (1889–91), two Open Performances given in Balliol College Hall (1888 and 1894) and handbills for eight Open Performances given at St. George's Hall, Y. M. C. A., George Street (1896-97, with a number undated).

These documents are ordered chronologically and held as a single bound volume. They are accompanied by other printed material relating to the Society, including introductory announcements (with lists of the works in rehearsal) and Balance Sheets. The volume concludes with additional posters for a number of the performaces.


1. Grand Orchestral Concerts, Sheldonian Theatre
All concerts were conducted by Mr C. H. Lloyd and all programmes include a list of the orchestral ensemble: with the exception of that featured in the programme for the first each, these lists carry a number of handwritten corrections and/or annotations. Programmes for all concerts except that in 1890 include words.
16 February 1889: Miss Zippora Monteith (vocal) and Mr Alfred Gibson (violin).
23 November 1889: Miss Zippora Monteith (vocal) and Mr Carl Deichmann (violin).
23 June 1890: Miss Margaret Davies (vocal) and Mr Alfred Gibson (violin) (two copies).
16 May 1891: Miss Lucy Franklin Higgs and Mr W. Alison Phillips (vocal) and Mr James Taylor (piano).


2. Open Performances/Balliol College Hall
Saturday 4 February [1888]: conducted by C. H. Lloyd (handbill and poster).
9 June 1894: Mr Ernest Walker (piano) and Miss Maude Pierpoint (vocal), conducted by Mr Basil Harwood (with list of the orchestral ensemble).


3. Open Performances/St. George's Hall, Y.M.C.A., George Street
Handbills for concerts were conducted by Basil Harwood.
Saturday 17 October [1896]:
12 December 1896: Mr Ernest Sykes (vocal).
20 March 1897: Miss Godwin Parker (vocal).
Also held are five additional handbills for which no year is given: these relate to performances given on Saturdays 21 January, 22 January, 23 January, 1 May and 16 October.
