Description A box of miscellaneous material relating to musical activity in Oxford between 1834 and 1977, including handbills and concert programmes for performances in 1834, 1844, 1950 and 1951 and prospectuses, leaflets and term cards, including Taphouses's Musick in Oxford (1928-32) and leaflets for the English Bach Festival (1963-77). Also, printed documentation relating to the Oxford City Concerts for Children (1928-37) and the Oxford Subscription Concerts (1968-69 season).

All items are held loosely within a single box, although some are grouped together in small envelopes as indicated below. The contents are listed here as follows:

1. Concert Programmes
2 December 1834, Music Room, Holywell Street: Second Concert (single-sheet programme). This was a two-part performance of vocal and instrumental solos, with orchestral overtures at the start of each act, given by Madame Stockhausen, Mr Sapio, Mr Machin and Mr Marshall (vocal) and Mr Stockhausen (harp).
27 March 1844, Assembly Room, Star Hotel: Book of Words of the Songs, Duetts, Glees &c., to be sung at Mr Thompson's Vocal and Instrumental Concert, conducted by Mr J. P. Barratt.
Summer 1950: A Commemoration of J. S. Bach, given by the Oxford Bach Choir in collaboration with the Oxford Bach Passion Choir, the Oxford Orchestral Society, Oxford Harmonic Society, the Jacques Orchestra, the Oxford Chamber Orchestra, the Eglesfield Society and the Oxford University Musical Club and Union (prospectus with programmes, including a brief historical introduction).Concerts were held in the Sheldonian Theatre, the Town Hall and the Holywell Music Room, as well as in various college Chapels.
8 August 1951, Sheldonian Theatre: The Hymns of the Wesley, given as the Hymn Singing Festival and as part of the Ecumenical Methodist Conference with H. Stanley Mountford (organ), conducted by Francis B. Westbrook (Souvenir Programme, including words and notes).

Musick in Oxford
Michaelmas Term 1928, Hilary Term 1929, Summer Term 1929, Hilary Term 1930, Michaelmas Term 1930, Hilary Term 1931 (two copies), Summer Term 1931, Michaelmas Term 1931 and Summer Term 1932: termcards entitled Musick in Oxford, published by Taphouse (held as separate envelope).

English Bach Festival
1963, 1965, 1967-69 and 1972-77: advertising leaflets for the English Bach Festivals, held at various venues in Oxford (1963-67) and in London and Oxford (1968-77).

Other material
2 July-28 August 1906: Promenade Concerts, given in the gardens of Worcester, Wadham and Trinity Colleges by the Hungarian Band, under the auspices of the Oxford Visitors and Entertainments Committee (single handbill).
29 July-12 August 1931: Tenth Summer Course in Music Teaching (prospectus, two copies).
1974-78: Oxford Music Festivals, nos. 1-3 (syllabuses, plus leaflet for 1974 and two copies for 1976)
11 June 1976, Merton Chapel: Kodaly Choir (ticket).
12-19 April 1977, Wycliffe Hall, Oxford: Oxford Chamber Music Week (Strings-Woodwind, Recorders), directed by Walter Bergmann and Jürgen Hess (leaflet).


3. Associated material
1928-29, 1929-30, 1933-34, 1934-35 and 1936-37: Annual Reports for Oxford City Concerts for Children, season nos. 4 , 5, 9, 10 and 12. Each season contained three Orchestral Concerts given in the Town Hall by the Oxford Orchestral Society (held as an individual folder).
1968-69 season: Financial Report for the Oxford Subscription Concerts (handbill).
