Description A miscellaneous collection of prospectuses and programmes (with words) for performances given at the Exeter Hall, London by the New Philharmonic Society during their first two seasons, 1852–53.

Each programme contains introductory material (effectively a prospectus) which includes a statement regarding the New Philharmonic Society, a list of the orchestral ensemble and a list of the works to be performed during the season.

All programmes also list the vocal and instrumental soloists and carry an advertisement for the next concert in the series. There are also some historical and analytical notes, with occasional musical examples.

The concerts were typically in two acts, combining orchestral repertory with orchestrally-accompanied vocal/choral music.

Season no. 1 (1852): nos. 1-3 and 5
The prospectus and programmes for concerts given on 24 March, 14 and 28 April, 28 May and 9 June 1852, conducted by Hector Berlioz. The fourth concert, for which no individual programme is held, took place on 12 May 1852 and included Beethoven, Symphony No.9.

24 March 1852: including the first part of Berlioz, Romeo and Juliet, with Miss Dolby and Mr Lockey (vocal). Also, Monsieur Silas (piano), Signor Sivori (violin), Signor Piatti (cello) and Signor Bottesini (double bass).
14 April 1852: including E.J. Loder, The Island of Calypso, an operatic masque, the vocal parts performed by Mrs Sims Reeves, Miss Dolby, Mr Sims Reeves and Mr Weiss. Also, Herr Reichardt (vocal) and Monsieur Alexandre Billet (piano).
28 April 1852: including the first part of Berlioz, Romeo and Juliet and Sponini, Selection from La Vestale, with Madame Clara Novello, Miss A.E. Byers, Herr Reichart and Herr Staudigl (vocal). Also Madame Pleyel (piano).
28 May 1852: including the first performance of E. Silas, Piano Concerto in D minor (E. Silas, piano).
9 June 1852: including Beethoven, Grand Choral Symphony (Madame Clara Novello, Miss Williams, Herr Reichart and Herr Staudigl, vocal) and selections from Dr Wylde, Prayer and Praise (cantata), Fragments from Faust, a lyrical drama by Berlioz, and other miscellaneous pieces.


Season no.2 (1853): nos. 3, 4 and 6.
The prospectus and programmes for the concerts given on 11 May, 1 June and 8 July 1853. According to the prospectus, the first two concerts of the season took place on 16 March and 13 April 1853. The fifth concert took place on 29 June 1853 and included Beethoven, Symphony No. 9. The performances were conducted by Herr Lindpaintner (nos.1-4) and Dr Spohr (nos.5-6).

11 May 1853: including The Music to Milton’s Paradise Lost by Dr Wylde, performed by Herr Staudigl, Herr Pischek, Mr Lockey and Herr Holzel (vocal). Also, a piano concerto by W. Sterndale Bennett (Arabella Goddard, piano).
1 June 1853: including two pieces of choral music by Lindpaintner, the solos performed by Miss Birch, Miss Dolby, Herr Reichart and Herr Pischek. Also, Fantasia for Piano, written and performed by Monsieur Prudent.
8 July 1853: containing much music by Spohr, including Quartet, for two Violins, Viola, and Cello, with Orchestral Accompaniment (op.121), Symphony for Two Orchestras, and Overture (Berggeist).
