Description
Programme with words for Mr Henry Leslie’s Concerts no.1 (13th season), given at St. James's Hall, London on 6 February 1868.
This was a two-part Orchestral and Choral performance, combining Mendelssohn, Oedipus Coloneus and a Classical Selection of vocal and orchestral repertory.
The wordbook cites the involvement of Messrs W.H. Cummings, Frederick Walker, Chaplin Henry and Lewis Thomas, Miss Emma Charlier, Madame Gilardoni and Madame Fanny Barnett (vocal), with Arabella Goddard (piano). There is a complete list of the orchestral ensemble, led by Mr Henry Blagrove and conducted by Henry Leslie.
The document carries a copy of the Season Arrangements, which includes a record of the principal works to be performed at each of the nine concerts (February to April). There is also an introduction to the series in which Mr Leslie claims to ‘explain the principles by which he proposed to be guided’. This document cites the involvement of Mr Henry Leslie’s Choir and of the following principal performers: Mesdames Lemmens-Sherrington, Rudersdorff, Carola, Sainton-Dolby and Patey-Whytock; and Messrs. Sims Reeves, W.H. Cummings, George Perren, Frederick Walker, Lewis Thomas, J.G. Patey and Chaplin Henry (vocal); Madame Arabella Goddard and Clara Schumann (piano); and Herr Ernst Pauer and Joseph Joachim (violin).
There are also copies of the full programmes for the concerts on 13 February (Choral Concert: Mr Henry Leslie’s Choir) and 20 February (Orchestral and Choral Concert).
