Description
A collection of ten programmes and wordbooks for John Capel's Vocal Concerts, given annually between 1817 and 1828 (missing 1822 and 1823) at the home of John Capel in Russell Square, London, held as the second part of a bound volume.
Concerts were given on the following dates: 20 May 1817, 19 May 1818, 11 May 1819, 9 May 1820, 8 May 1821, 11 May 1824, 10 May 1825, 9 May 1826, 8 May 1827 and 13 May 1828.
These were two-part vocal concerts for soloists and chorus, including significant amounts of music by English composers (particularly glees), typically accompanied on the keyboard.
The programmes carry a number of annotations in Smart's hand. These are largely concerned with the division of the vocal parts and include summaries of how many pieces each soloist sang per concert. They also comment on the timings of the performance (overall and of individual pieces/sections) and on aspects of performance practice (transpositions, accompaniments, encores etc).
The programmes list the following solo performers.

Knyvett (1827, 1828), Mrs Vaughan (1817), Miss Cawse (1824, 1825, 1826, 1827, 1828), Miss H Cawse (1824, 1825, 1826, 1827, 1828), Miss Goodall (1817, 1818, 1819, 1820, 1821, 1824, 1825), Miss Stephens (1819, 1825, 1826, 1827, 1828), Mr Bartleman (1820), Mr Bellamy (1819), Mr Evans (1817, 1820, 1821, 1824, 1825, 1826, 1827, 1828), Mr Goss (1826), Mr Hawes (1817, 1820, 1821, 1824, 1825, 1826, 1827, 1828), Mr Horncastle (1828), Mr W.
