Description A programme book for the first May Musical Festival at Pittsburgh, held between 28 and 31 May 1879 in the Exposition Building.

This document provides detailed information regarding the promoters, organizers and performers at the festival, including complete lists of the choral and orchestral ensembles, under the direction of Clement Tetedoux and Carl Retter.

The solo performers were Miss Abbie Whinnery (soprano), Miss Ita Welsh (alto), Mr William Courtney (tenor) and Mr Myron W. Whitney (bass), with Mr Jos. H. Gittings (organ).

The document also contains the programmes and wordbooks for three evening (28-30 May) and one matinee performance (31 May). Of the evening performances, the first was of Handel, The Messiah and the second of Mendelssohn, Elijah. The third evening and the matinee performances were both ‘miscellaneous’ in nature.

Additional material includes notes on the festival and on the festival building, details regarding ticketing and admissions, biographies of the conductor, soloist, the Gounod Club and the Symphonic Society, and extensive programme notes on the choral pieces being performed.
