Description
The illustrated programme and wordbook for the fifth concert of the 72nd season of performances given by the Manchester Gentlemen’s Glee Club, held on 6 February 1906 at ‘Albion’, Piccadilly, Manchester.
This was a two-part ‘Consort of Vocal Musick with ye accompaniments of ye Chest of Viols and eke ye Virginals’, given prior to supper. The programme also lists a number of pieces (including a grace) performed after the meal (no words given).
The programme provides a detailed list of the members of the choir and of the violists, directed by Dr Henry Watson. The names of the President and other members of the Club’s committee are also included.
The programme includes facsimiles of the original MS of ‘Sumer is icumen in’ and of the second page of William Byrd, ‘Psalmes, Sonets, and Songs of Sadnes and Piety’. Both the front and back covers are illustrated, the later comprising a portrait of Henry Purcell. There is also, a handwritten letter dated 4 June 1906 from Henry Watson to Mr King.
