Collection name London Subscription Concerts (1818-1819)

Description A collection of prospectuses and programmes for two seasons of London Subscription Concerts given at the London Tavern, Bishopsgate Street in 1818 and 1819, arranged chronologically in a single bound volume.

These were two-part miscellaneous concerts, led by Nicholas Mori and conducted by Sir George Smart, given on the following dates:
5 and 19 January, 2 and 16 February, 2 March and 12 March, and 6 April 1818.
10 and 22 February, 8 March and 22 March, 1 April and 22 April 1819.

The performances featured the following solo performers:

Signor Begrez, Messrs Braham, Evans, Hawes, Lacy, Mullinex, Terrail, Mrs Salmon, Miss Carew, Goodall (both seasons); Signors Ambrogetti and Angrisani, Messrs Bellamy, Elliot, Leete, Payne, Thorne, Master Wintle, Madame Foder and Georgi Bellochi, Mrs Dickons and Lacy, Miss Corri, Frith, Sharp, Stephens and Williams, and Les Demoiselle De Lihu (single season)

Instrumental
Messrs Robert Lindley (Vcl) and Thomas Willman (Ct) and Miss Sharp (Harp) (both seasons); Messrs Charles Ashley (Vcl), Bertini (Pno), Betts (Vln), Domenico Dragonetti (Db) Fredrich Griesbach (Ob), William Griesbach (Vla), Thomas Harper (Tpt), James Holmes (Bn), Frederic Kalkbrenner (Pno), Lyon (Vla), Ferdinand Ries (Pno), Tully (Hn), Watts (Vln/Vla), Miss Philpot (Pno) and Mlle Jams (Pno) (single season).

The programmes carry numerous handwritten annotations concerning alterations to the programme order: comments refer to both repertory and performers and provide an indication of which pieces were encored. There are also indications of the timings for the performance (precise start and finish times for the concerts and the duration of individual pieces), and comments regarding rehearsal provision.

In addition to the concert programmes, there is various printed and handwritten correspondence from the series secretary (W.S. Spedding/W. Scotcher) regarding subscription terms, ticket arrangements and concert etiquette. There is also correspondence regarding an aborted third series of these concerts in 1820.
