Collection name
London Glee and Madrigal Union (1860)
Unique identifier
11781.d.23.(5-11.)
Description
A collection of programmes and wordbooks for seven weekly performances given at the Dudley Gallery, Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly by the London Glee and Madrigal Union between January and February 1860.
These were two-part concerts of solo and ensemble English vocal music, given by Miss J. Wells, Miss Eyles, Mr Baxter, Mr W.H. Cummings and Mr Lawler, under the direction of Mr Land. There are a number of pieces marked as being performed for the 'first time'.
Each concert featured Mr Thomas Oliphant as Literary Illustrator. The programmes for the first and second concerts include some Introductory Remarks which appear to suggest that the programme either began with, or was punctuated by, historical/analytical remarks by Oliphant (Honorary Secretary to the Madrigal Society).
Only the programme for the sixth concert is dated: the information provided in square brackets below is based on the relationship of the other performances to this. It would appear that each programme was given a number of times during the week, the date given below being the Monday of that week.
Undated [First Week, 2 January 1860]
The parts of this concert were entitled 'Compositions of an Early Period up to the year 1610' and 'Miscellaneous'.
Second Week [9 January 1860]
The parts of this concert were entitled 'Compositions of an Early Period' and 'Miscellaneous'.
Third Week [16 January 1860]
The first part of this concert was entitled 'Compositions of an Early Period' and included the first performances of the anonymous pieces 'It was a lover and his lass' and 'Near Woodstock Town'. The second part included the first performance of a four-part glee by Henry R. Bishop.
Fourth Week [23 January 1860]
Including the first performance of the traditional song 'At her cottage door'.
Fifth Week [30 January 1860]
Including the first performance of Richard Leveridge, Old Song, 'Black-eyed Susan'.
Sixth (and last) Week (6 February 1860)
The first part of this concert consisted of 'Selections from the works of Sir Henry R. Bishop'.
This document also includes a programme (no wordbook) for an Afternoon Concert given on 6, 8 and 10 February, along with the note that: 'By general request, the programme for the Afternoon Concert includes a Selection from the most successful pieces performed by the LONDON GLEE AND MADRIGAL UNION during the present series'.
Termination of the Series, Morning Programme [13 February 1860]
This document also includes the programme (no wordbook) for an Evening Concert, given on 14 and 17 February.
