Collection name Kingston-Upon-Hull Musical Festival (1834)

Description A collection of programmes and wordbooks for the three morning and two evening performances given between 24 and 26 September 1834 as the Kingston-upon-Hull Grand Musical Festival, conducted by Sir George Smart, held as a single bound volume.

The volume begins with an illustration of the View of the Interior of the Trinity Church as it appeared during the Festival and with an extended prose account of the performances. Bound at the close is a ticket for the 26 September.

All programmes begin with lists of the Patrons of the Festival and of the members of the orchestral ensemble, led by Franz Cramer. Programmes for the morning performances include a list of the choral ensemble.

There is also a record of the following vocal and instrumental performers:
Madame Caradori Allan, Miss Mason, Miss Clara Novello and Madame Stockhausen; Mr Braham, Mr Hobbs, Mr Machin, and Mr H. Phillips (vocal), with Signor Nagel (violin).

The morning performances were given at Holy Trinity Church and the evening concerts at the [New] Music Room, Kingston Square.

Morning:
24 September: Grand Selection of Sacred Music, including selections from: Sigmond Neukomm, The Mount of Sinai; A. Romberg, Ode, The Transient and Eternal; Beethoven, Mount of Olives; Freidrich Kunzen, The Hallelujah of The Creation; Mozart, Requiem; and Handel, Israel in Egypt.
25 September: Handel, Messiah.
26 September: Grand Selection of Sacred Music, including selections from Haydn, Creation and Spohr, The Last Judgement.

Evening:
24 and 25 September: both were two-part miscellaneous concerts, consisting principally of vocal solos, with instrumental concertante items and orchestral overtures/symphonies at the beginning of each part.

Collections Overview The Gerald Coke Handel Collection is an internationally important collection of material relating to Handel and his contemporaries, including manuscripts, printed books and music, libretti, paintings and engravings, memorabilia, art works and ephemera. The Handel collection is open for research Wednesday-Friday, and the display room (with access to recorded music) is open with the rest of the museum Tuesday-Sunday 10-6.
