Collection Description

Collection name Kingston-upon-Hull Grand Musical Festival (1834)
Unique identifier Case 61.g.11.
Description A collection of prospectuses, handbills, programmes and wordbooks for the Kingston-upon-Hull Grand Musical Festivals of 1834 and 1840, with MS notes by Sir George Smart, held as two bound volumes.

In both cases, the Festivals consisted of morning performances of sacred music given at Holy Trinity Church and evening concerts given at the [New] Music Room, Kingston Square. The latter were two-part miscellaneous performances, consisting principally of vocal solos, with instrumental concertante items and orchestral overtures/symphonies at the beginning of each part.

The prospectus and all of the programmes include a list of the Patrons of the Festival and a record of the principal vocal and instrumental soloists. All programmes for the 1834 Festival and those for the morning concerts of 1840 include a list of the orchestral ensemble. The programmes for the morning concerts given during both events include a list of the choral ensemble.

Many of the programmes contain annotations in Smart's hand. These provide an exact record of the timings for the concert (complete and for individual sections/pieces) and of any alterations to the printed programmes. They also offer some extra information on the utilization of the performing forces, comments on the nature of the accompaniment to the vocal pieces, and a record of which pieces were encored (and on whose request).

Both festivals were conducted by Sir George Smart and led by Franz Cramer and Mr Loder (1840 only).
