Collection Description

Collection name Jubilee Concert Programme (1908)
Unique identifier X.419/1593
Description Analytical programme for the fourteenth concert of the Jubilee Season of the Hallé Concerts Society, given on 30 January 1908 at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester and conducted by Franz Beidler.

This was a two-part concert of nineteenth-century orchestral repertory, with solo/concertante pieces for Mr Herbert Brown (vocal) and Miss Irene Scharrer (piano) in each part.

The programme provides historical and analytical notes written by Ernest Newman. These include musical examples and the text for the vocal pieces, as well as an indication of the number of times each orchestral work had been given by the Society, with a note of the date of the last performance.

A list of both the orchestral and choral ensembles is provided (the latter not used in this performance) and there is a brief handwritten annotation which suggests that the conductor, Mr Franz Beidler, was the ‘son-in-law of Richard Wagner’.

The programme also includes the names of the executive committee for the Society, a list of the Guarantors, and detailed ‘Arrangements’ for the season, including information regarding tickets.

It concludes with a number of advertisements, including one for the next performance in the series (with programme and details of performers) given on 6 February, a reproduction of the programme from the first performance given by the Hallé Concerts Society on 30 January 1858, and a prospectus for the Brodsky Quartet Concerts held between November 1907 and April 1908 at the Midland Hall in Manchester (twelfth season).
