Description A complete set of analytical programmes for Johann Kruse’s Second Musical Festival, given at the Queen's Hall, Langham Place on 9, 11, 13, 16, 18, 19 and 20 April 1904. The concert on 19 April was billed as an ‘Extra Concert’.

These were two-part performances of choral and orchestral repertory, conducted, unless otherwise stated below, by Felix Weingartner. The first and last concert included a choral ensemble drawn from the Sheffield Musical Union (conducted by Mr Henry Coward), the members of which are listed in full in the programme.

All programmes contain wordbooks, historical and analytical notes (including musical examples) and a list of the orchestral ensemble. Unless otherwise stated below, the notes were written by Ernest Walker.

9 April 1904: Elgar, The Dream of Gerontius/Beethoven, Symphony No.9, with the vocalists Mr Gervase Elwes, Mrs Harriet Foster and Mr D. Ffrangcon-Davies (Elgar) and Miss Agnes Nicholls, Miss Edna Thornton, Mr Gervase Elwes and Mr D. Ffrangcon Davies (Beethoven) (with notes on the Elgar written by A.J. Jaeger).

11 April 1904: symphonies by Haydn (‘Oxford’) and Brahms (No.2), Tchaikovsky, Piano Concerto in B flat minor and Liszt, Symphonic Poem ‘Tasso’.

13 April 1904: Schubert, Symphony No. 7, overtures by Schumann (‘Manfred’) and Weber (‘Oberon’) and Spohr, Concerto in A minor for Violin and Orchestra (Kruse, violin).

16 April 1904: including overtures by Mendelssohn (‘Midsummer-Night’s Dream') and Tchaikovsky (‘Romeo and Juliet’), Mendelssohn, Violin Concerto (Kruse, violin) and Mozart, Symphony in C, K551. Also, Three Songs with Orchestral Accompaniment by Felix Weingartner, sung by Mr D. Ffrangcon-Davies.

18 April 1904: Tchaikovsky, Symphony no.6, with concertante music given by Mr Albert Fransella (flute) and Kruse (violin).

19 April 1904: Wagner Concert, with Mr Frederic Austin and Miss Agnes Nicholls (vocal) and Kruse (violin).

20 April 1904: including Beethoven, Missa Solennis, Elgar, Variations on an Original Theme and Parry, Blest Pair of Sirens, with Miss Agnes Nicholls, Miss Edna Thornton, Mr Gervase Elwes and Mr Frederic Austin (vocal) (with a small insert announcement of Kruse’s intention of running a third series in 1905).
