Description The programme, with words, for a Grand Orchestral Concert given for the Benefit of the Benevolent Fund of the Hotel Employees' Society at St Martin’s Town Hall, Charing Cross Road, on 4 November 1899, under the direction of Mr Meyer van Praag.

This document includes a printed statement entitled ‘Press Notes’, which claims that the ‘programme consists of English, French, Italian, Hungarian, Russian and Belgian pieces’ which are ‘not of the usual hackneyed order’. These include the first performance of a Concert Overture by van Praag which ‘has no pretention [sic] of new school or harmonies, but … is simply a translation of the Composer’s feelings’. The concert also included: the first performance of Bolzoni, Scherzo ‘La Poule’; the first English performance of Franz Lehar, Russiche Bauern-Tanze ‘Kukuska’; and first London performance of J. Burgmein, Fantaisie Hongroise.

The programme includes some notes on the history of the Society (founded in Geneva in 1877), a photograph of van Praag and a list of the orchestral ensemble, led by Mr Dupont. Miss de Lea, Miss Morton, Mr Eric Farr are listed are vocal soloists.
