Description
Brochure and programmes for Five Historical Violoncello Recitals, given by Boris Hambourg on 12, 19 and 26 May and 9 and 23 June [1906] at the Aeolian Hall, London.
The performances were given 'to illustrate the development of the cello literature from its earliest beginning to the present day' and were given the following titles:
1. Italian and other Masters of the 17th and 18th Centuries
2. German Masters
3. Romantic School
4. Composers of the latter half of the 19th Century
5. Living Composers, including the first London performance of a Czardas by Dezsö Kordy and Romance sans Paroles by Landon Ronald.
Boris Hambourg was assisted by the following performers: Mark Hambourg, Jan Hambourg, Baron F. D’Erlanger, Dr Plimmer, Miss Lucie Hillier, Miss Audrey Chapman, Mr W.E. Whitehouse, Mr Herbert Walenn and Mr E. van der Straeten, accompanied by Miss Daisy Bucktrout, Mr A. Roan Saunders and Mr Charlton Keith.
This document includes an extensive historical essay by E. van der Straeten, tracing the development of the cello in various countries.
All composers listed in these programmes are given with birth/date dates and movement titles are listed where appropriate.
There is also a note claiming that ‘Mr Boris Hambourg has made a special feature of playing (where possible) works originally written with pianoforte accompaniment, as compositions with orchestral accompaniment … lose greatly by being performed in any other way’.
