Description
A prospectus, with programmes, for the three morning and three evening performances given between 10 and 12 September 1822 as the Hereford Music Meeting/96th meeting of the Three Choirs of Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester.
This document includes a list of the Stewards for the Festival, and cites the involvement of the following vocal soloists: Mrs Salmon, Miss D. Travis, Miss Stephens, Mr Vaughan, Mr W. Knyvett, Mr Rolle and Mr Bellamy.
There is also a list of the instrumental performers - led by Franz Cramer and conducted by Professor Clarke Whitfield - and the observation that ‘the choral band will be supported by the celebrated Female Singers from Lancashire, and [will be] more numerous and select than on any previous occasion’.
The morning concerts were held in Hereford Cathedral and consisted of sacred choral repertory. The evening events were described as Grand Miscellaneous Concerts and were held in the New Shire Hall. They were two-part performances of vocal and instrumental music, typically with orchestral overtures/symphonies at the beginning of each act.
Morning:
10 September: a Sermon preached by Rev. James Garbett, accompanied by a performance of Handel, Grand Te Deum and various shorter works by Handel and Boyce.
11 September: Handel, The Messiah.
12 September: a three-part concert consisting of Dr Clarke Whitfield, New Oratorio ‘The Crucifixion’, Haydn, The Creation (Part I), and a miscellaneous act, dominated by the music of Handel.
Evening:
10 September: Handel, Acis and Galatea with a miscellaneous act, the latter including a string quartet by Mozart.
11 September: including Purcell, Scene from the Tempest and a string quintet by Boccherini.
