Collection name Henry Wood Concert Society (1946-69)

Description A collection of 79 programmes and wordbooks for 51 different concerts sponsored by the Henry Wood Concert Society, given at the Royal Albert Hall, London between 1946 and 1969, held as four bound volumes divided as follows: 1946–49, 1946–52, 1949–52 and 1953–69.

All programmes include historical and analytical notes (many with musical examples) and some include lists of the orchestral ensemble. Certain programmes contained in volumes 2 and 4 carry have been signed by the performers.

All programmes provide full details regarding orchestral leaders, conductors and vocal and instrumental soloists. These include the BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra and Philharmonia Orchestra; Adrian Boult, Basil Cameron, Rafael Kubelik, Clarence Raybould and Dr Malcolm Sargent; Alfred Cortot, Benno Moiseiwitsch and Salomon (piano), Kathleen Ferrier (voice), Pierre Fournier (cello) Yehudi Menuhin and Szigeti (vln).

Volume 1: 1946–49
14 programmes from the Society's first three seasons:
20 November 1946 and 1 April and 18 May 1947.
5 November and 15 December 1947, 10 February, 10 April and 11 and 28 May 1948.
3 November and 13 December 1948 and 12 February, 2 March and 13 April 1949.

Volume 2: 1946–52
This volume includes duplicates of the programmes for the first three seasons, with many bearing of the signatures of performers and conductors. There are also 14 programmes for the Society's next three seasons.
1 October and 2 November 1949 and 3 March and 10 May 1950.
6 and 25 October 1950 and 3 March, 28 May and 24 June 1951 (the last 2 being part of the Festival of Britain).
12 and 31 October 1951 and 3 March, 23 April and 18 October 1952.

Volume 3: 1949–52
This volume includes a repeat of the programmes for the 1949–52 seasons.

Volume 4: 1953–69
This volume includes 23 programmes, given on the following dates:
16 June 1953, 14 November 1953, 19 November 1954, 1 November 1955, 27 November 1956, 2 June 1957 (an Elgar concert), 26 November 1957, 25 November 1958, 30 November 1959, 1 November 1960, 3 March 1961, 30 November 1961, 2 March 1962, 27 November 1962, 26 March 1963, 26 November 1963, 6 March 1964, 27 November 1964, 4 March 1965, 26 November 1965, 3 March 1966, 7 December 1966, 3 March 1969. The concerts in March were typically birthday/tribute concerts whilst those in November/December were of Handel, The Messiah.
