Collection name Handel Festival Book of Words (1865-1903)

Description A collection of handbills and wordbooks for Handel Triennial Festivals given at the Crystal Palace, London in 1865, 1868, 1871, 1874, 1877 and 1903, conducted by Michael Costa (1865-77) and Frederic Cowen (1903).

Documentation for all years includes a handbill for the General Rehearsal. Also, a historical Introduction to the Festival (tracing its history back to the Commemoration Festivals of 1784), lists of the orchestral and choral ensembles, lists of the Stewards, Directors and Committee members of the Sacred Harmonic Society, and historical programme notes (generally referred to as Prefaces). The volume for 1903 includes photographs of the principal performers.

All Festivals consisted of the following three programmes of music by Handel: The Messiah; Selection; and Israel in Egypt. Dates given in square brackets below are for the General Rehearsal.

Collections Overview The Gerald Coke Handel Collection is an internationally important collection of material relating to Handel and his contemporaries, including manuscripts, printed books and music, libretti, paintings and engravings, memorabilia, art works and ephemera. The Handel collection is open for research Wednesday-Friday, and the display room (with access to recorded music) is open with the rest of the museum Tuesday-Sunday 10-6.
