Collection name Handel Commemoration Festivals (1784-1809)

Description A bound volume containing a miscellaneous collection of programmes and wordbooks relating to the Handel Commemoration Festival presented by the Royal Society of Musicians at Westminster Abbey between 1784 and 1791. Also, programmes and wordbooks for Harrison, Bartleman and Greatorex's Vocal Concerts nos. 2 and 4, given at the New Rooms, Hanover Square on 24 February and 10 March 1809 and two copies of a wordbook with notes for The Carmen Seculare of Horace.

Programmes are listed here by type, with tract numbers preserved as an indication of arrangement.

Harrison, Bartleman and Greatorex's Vocal Concerts
Programmes and wordbooks for the second and fourth concerts of the series, given on 24 February and 10 March 1809 (tracts 3 and 1). The second of these includes a detailed record of the Vocal Performers for the series and includes a list of the orchestral ensemble (led by Charles Weichsel).


2. Handel Commemoration Festival
Programmes and wordbooks for five performances, conducted by Joah Bates with John Ashley (assistant conductor). All documents include a record of the Directors and Assistant Directors for the Festivals.

26 and 29 May 1784: First and Third Performances (tracts 6 and 8), the latter being Handel, The Messiah. Both documents include lists of the choral and instrumental ensembles.

8 June 1785: Third Performance, being Handel, The Messiah (tract 9). This document includes a list of the Subscribers to the Royal Society of Musicians.

31 May 1786: First Performance (tract 7 and 10, two copies). Both documents include lists of the Subscribers to the Royal Society of Musicians.

26 May 1791: Second Performance of the Sixth Grand Musical Festival, being a Selection of Sacred Music (tract 2).


3. The Carmen Seculare of Horace
Two copies of a wordbook, with explanatory notes, for The Carmen Seculare of Horace, set to music by Mr Philidor (tracts 4 and 5).
