Grand Selections of Sacred Music (1789-1823)

Description
A collection of individual programmes with words for sixteen Grand Selections of Sacred Music, given at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden between 1789 and 1823, under the direction of Mr [Samuel] Harrison and Mr [Charles] Ashley (1791 and 1792), Mr Ashley alone (1793-1811), Mr C. J. Ashley (1818) and Mr Bochsa (1823).
All programmes provide an indication of the vocal soloists. From 1802, programmes provide a preliminary list of the principal vocal performers. Those for 1803, 1804 and 1818 provide a list of the principal instrumental players, led by Mr Weichsel (1803–04) and Mr Ware (1818).
Unless otherwise stated below, performances up to 1802 were described as a Grand Selection of Sacred Music from the Works of Handel. Thereafter, performances continued to be described as Grand Selections but began to include choral/sacred music by other composers.

1796: this performance included a Concerto on the Grand Piano Forte by Miss McArthur (end of part I) and a Concerto on the Harp by Madame Delaval (end of part II).

19 February 1823: including the first English performance of 'The Lady of the Lake', the words selection from the celebrated Poem of that Name, written by Sir Walter Scott, and arranged to Rossini's admired Opera of La Donna del Lago.

Collections Overview
The Gerald Coke Handel Collection is an internationally important collection of material relating to Handel and his contemporaries, including manuscripts, printed books and music, libretti, paintings and engravings, memorabilia, art works and ephemera. The Handel collection is open for research Wednesday-Friday, and the display room (with access to recorded music) is open with the rest of the museum Tuesday-Sunday 10-6.
