Collection Description

Collection name Grand Scotch Festival (1898-99)
Unique identifier e.1395.b. (6.)
Description A collection of programmes and wordbooks for two Grand Scotch Festival concerts, given at the Royal Albert Hall, London on St Andrew's Day [30 November] 1898 and 1899.

Both were two-part concerts of solo and ensemble vocal music, with a strong Scottish orientation, conducted by Mr William Carter, Mr Wilhelm Ganz, Mr Malcolm Lawson and Mr Henry T. Dunkerton. Each act began with an appearance from the Pipers of Her Majesty's Scots Guards.

Both programmes list and provide photographs of the vocal soloists. That for the second concert carries a number of handwritten annotations, which offer some very basic observations on the style and standard of the performance.
