Description
Souvenir Programme for a Grand Military and Patriotic Concert, organised by Miss Ellaline Terriss and Mr C.P. Little, in Aid of the Sick and Wounded, the Widows and Orphans, and the Families of our Troops now serving in South Africa, held on 5 December 1899 at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
This was a two-part concert consisting of predominantly English vocal repertory with instrumental/orchestral ensemble pieces performed by military bands. The event also included Organ Recitals by Mr J.M. Coward (before the concert) and Mr Walter Alcock (during the interval).
The programme cites the involvement of the following solo performers: Madame Ella Russell, Miss Hilda Wilson, Miss Marie Tempest, Miss Edna May, Miss Kate Cutler, Miss Jessie Huddlestone, Miss Evie Greene, Miss Decima Moore, Miss Grace Palotta, Miss Esther Palliser and Mrs Beerbohm Tree; Messrs Barton McGuckin, Kennerley Rumford, Norman Salmond, H. Lane Wilson, Denham Price, Joseph O’Mara, John Coates, Charles Copland, Arthur Boyd, R. Earle, Hayden Coffin, De Wolf Hopper, Lewis Waller, Ian Colquhon, Frank Lawton and Charles Frohman (vocal) with Miss [Natalia] Janotha (piano), accompanied by Mr Landon Ronald, Mrs Needham and Mr Wilhelm Ganz (piano).
Additional performers: South London Choral Association (conducted by Mr L.C. Venables), the London Kymric Ladies’ Choir (conducted by Miss Rees) and the chorus from Daly’s and the Gaiety Theatres; Mr Cammeyer’s Amateur Banjo, Mandoline [sic] and Guitar Orchestra; and the Bands of the 1st Life Guards (Mr Englefield), 2nd Life Guards (Mr Hall), Royal Horse Guards Blue (Charles Godfrey), Grenadier Guards (Mr Williams), Scots Guards (Mr W. Dunkerton), Coldstream Guards (Mr J.W. Rogan), Royal Engineers (Lieut. J. Sommer), Royal Marine Light Infantry (Mr Wright) and Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall (Lieut. Stretton).
The programme includes an extensive list of Patrons for the event and a record of Actors and Actresses Officiating as Hospital Nurses. There are also the words to a number of patriotic songs (including the National Anthem and Rule Britannia) and various photographs, including pictures of several members of the royal family.
