Description
A prospectus, with programmes and wordbooks, for the First Glasgow Musical Festival, given at the City Hall, Glasgow between 24 and 27 January 1860 in aid of the funds of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the asylum for the blind.
24 January 1860: Mendelssohn, Elijah.
25 January 1860: Grand Miscellaneous Concert: selections from the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Weber, Mendelssohn, Verdi, etc.
26 January 1860: Charles Edward Horsley, Gideon: A Sacred Lyrical Oratorio. This work, written for the Glasgow Choral Union and conducted by the composer, was being performed for the first time.
27 January 1860: Handel, The Messiah (with historical Preface).
This document includes a list of Patrons, Acting Stewards and Trustees for this event and cites the following vocal soloists: Madame Clara Novello and Miss Whitham; Miss Dolby and Mrs Lockey, Mr Sims Reeves and Mr Lockey; and Mr Weiss and Mr Winn.
The festival was given by the Glasgow Choral Union, with Mr Henry Smart (organ), conducted by Mr H. Blagrove. The prospectus provides a list of the complete orchestral ensemble, which is described as being 'selected exclusively from the London Philharmonic Society'.
The volume also includes some Introductory Remarks and a copy of the General Arrangements and Regulations for the Festival. The former comment both on the arrangements for this Festival and on its relationship to the network of English events of this kind.
