Collection Description

Collection name Friday Popular Concerts (1894)
Unique identifier d.480.a
Description A parody of the programme books of the Monday Popular Concerts, this document relates to a supposed performance given on 27 April 1894 at the Salle de Saint Jacques, 43 Hyde Park Gate.

The programme is made up of vocal and instrumental solos, with a string quartet in D minor to begin. The composers and performers listed are a combination of real and spoof characters.

The notes for the programme contain a number of handwritten annotations, correcting the official programme and providing the names of bona fide players/singers. The notes themselves, by contrast, are entirely sarcastic, combining analytical nonsense with historical irrelevance (and irreverence)!

The programme also includes a number of spoof advertisements. Many of these are for piano makers but a number relate to other household products.
