Collection name Frankfurt Programmes (1873-74)

Description An incomplete collection of programmes and wordbooks for ten Museum Concerts given under the direction of C. Müller in the Grossen Concert-Saal, Frankfurt during the 1873–74 season (nos.1-5 and 8-12). Also, a miscellaneous selection of six programmes for concerts given at various venues in the same city during these years.

1. Museum Concerts
10 and 24 October, 7 and 21 November and 5 December 1873 and 23 January, 6 and 20 February and 6 and 20 March 1874.

These were two-part concerts, consisting primarily of nineteenth-century German repertory. The first part of each performance was typically a ‘miscellaneous’ act, beginning with an overture and combining concertante and solo music for instruments and voices. The second often included only a single piece, typically a symphony from Beethoven or Schumann.

All programmes list the names of the vocal and instrumental soloists and the conductor but provide no further information regarding the performers. They also carry an advertisement for the next concert in the series.


2. Miscellaneous concerts
28 October 1873, Grossen Concert-Saal: Frankfurter Liederkranz, with Fraulein Hofmeister and Herren Pichler and Reinhold H[ ...] (vocal), Hugo Heermann (violin) and the Frankfurt Theatre Orchestra (programme and wordbook). This was a one-act performance of late eighteenth and nineteenth-century German operatic repertory, with Mendelssohn, Violin concerto.

[no date] [no venue]: Church Choirs of Salzungen, in a two-part concert of Italian and German sacred vocal music (with words and brief historical notes on the featured composers).

25 February 1874, Grosen Saale des Saalbaues: J.S. Bach, Mass in B minor (programme and wordbook, providing no information regarding the performers).

14 March 1874 [no venue]: two-act concert of German compositions, predominantly vocal. This handwritten document, which includes a detail record of the soloists engaged, carries an annotation in a different hand which suggests a possible venue: this is largely illegible but may read ‘St Krebs’ School’.

30 and 31 March 1874, Banketsaale des Saalbaues: Frankfurt Music School (single item for four performances). The morning performances were of music for piano and strings, the afternoon for piano.

3 April 1874 [no venue]: J.S. Bach, St Matthew Passion, presented by the Cäcilien-Verein, with Louise Thomae (soprano), Amalie Kling (alto), Max Huber (tenor), Carl Hill (bass) and Dr. Ohlenschlager (bass) (programme and wordbook).
