Unique identifier
Mus. 318 d.31
Description
The first of two boxes of material relating to the Stock Exchange Orchestral Society, including a miscellaneous selection of programme books for Subscription Concerts given during the ninth to eleventh seasons at St. James's Hall, London and during the twelfth to thirteenth and sixteenth to nineteenth seasons at the Queen's Hall, London. Also, programme books for a concert in aid of the Chelsea Hospital for Women (9 May 1893, St. James's Hall) and for a Smoking Concert (8 January 1900, Queen's Hall).
These were two-part choral and orchestral concerts with some vocal and instrumental solos, including a large number of works being performed for the first time. Up to the end of the 13th season, the concerts were conducted by George Kitchin. Thereafter, the choir was conducted by Munro Davison and the orchestra by Arthur W. Payne.
The programmes include words and Historical and Analytical Notes (with musical examples), lists of the Officers, Members and Stewards of the organization, and records of the choral and orchestral ensembles.
Certain programmes also carry handwritten annotations, some quite extended, which offer analytical observations on the performance and on the works performed.
