Description
A largely complete collection of programmes for the first season of the London Symphony Orchestra Concerts (nos. 1-7 and 12-16), held at St. James's Hall, London between 1886 and 1887, held loosely in a single box.
Also, programmes for two further performances given by the London Symphony Orchestra at the Queen's Hall on Friday 13 January [no year] and 10 April 1911.
1. London Symphony Concerts (1886-87)
All programmes include the words of the vocal pieces and are Historically and Analytical Illustrated by Joseph Bennett. Many also carry handwritten annotations. The concerts were conducted by Mr Henschel and include a number of works being given for the first time.
17 November: Charles Kaiser (vocal).
25 November: Miss Fanny Davies (piano), including the first London performance of F. Corder, Idyl, Evening on the Seashore.
1 December: Miss Emily Shinner (violin), including the first English performances of A. Rubinstein, Symphony in A minor (no. 6) and G. Henschel, Hymne au Créateur. Also, the first London performance of A. D. Duvivier, Symphonic Poem, The Triumph.
7 December: Miss Agnes Zimmermann (piano) and Lena Little (alto), including the first London performances of: Hans Huber, Concerto for Pianoforte in C, op. 36; C. Hubert H. Parry, Symphony Suite (conducted by the composer); and Berlioz, La Captive, Reverie for Contralto
15 December: Franz Ondricek (violin), including the first performance of Charles Thane, Scena and Prayer from the Opera, Wanda and the first London performance of F. Gernsheim, Concerto for Violin in D, op. 42.
22 December: Mr W. Wotton (bassoon).
12 January: Bernhard Stavenhagen (piano) and Miss Annie Marriot (vocal), including the first English performance of Arthur Foote, Serenade for Strings in E.
15 February: Mr Santley (vocal), including Wagner Träume, a Study for Orchestra to 'Tristan und Isolde ('First Public Performance in accordance with the M.S. score').
24 February: Joachim (violin).
2 March: Julius Klengel (cello) and Miss Emily Winant (vocal).
9 March: Mr Schoenberger (piano) and Mrs Henschel (vocal), including the first performance of Henry Holmes, Symphony Boscastle in C, no. 3.
16 March: Mr Edward Lloyd (vocal).
2. Other concerts
These documents include words, Analytical Notes, musical examples and lists of the orchestral ensemble.
Friday 13 January [no year]: Grand Concert given with the Leeds Philharmonic Chorus, conducted by Wassili Safonoff.
10 April 1911: Farewell Concert to Hans Richter, conducted by Richter (with biographical note/An Appreciation on Richter).
