Collection Description

Collection name F. Gilbert Webb collection (1875-1935)
Unique identifier Mus 318
Description A miscellaneous collection of programmes and brochures belonging to the music critic and programme note writer F. Gilbert Webb (1852–1941), held as 28 boxes and 37 bound volumes.

The collection is made up principally of programmes from London concert performances, given between 1875 and 1935, including extended sequences of programmes for widely recognized series such as the Sunday Concert Society and the Royal Philharmonic Society and for less familiar organizations such as the Stock Exchange Orchestral Society (1892–1913).

The most widely represented venues are the Crystal Palace (Saturday Concerts), the Queen's Hall and the Royal Albert Hall.

The majority of the programmes contain words and historical and/or analytical notes (often with musical examples). Some of the notes were written by Webb and many other carry handwritten annotations/observations from him. Many programmes also include lists of the choral and/or orchestral ensembles and provide photographs of the principal performers.
