Collection name
Elderhorst Chamber Concerts (1898-99)
Unique identifier
c.371.g. (4.)
Description
A collection of five undated programmes for concerts given at the Steinway Hall, London during the first two seasons of the Elderhorst Chamber Concerts, 1898-99. Many of the programmes contain advertisements for the next performance in the series, which allows for the dating provided in square brackets below.
All concerts were in two-parts and combined vocal and instrumental solos with instrumental chamber music. All programmes include brief historical and analytical notes on the principal works performed and the texts for the vocal pieces.
The concerts on 9 November 1898 and that for which no date can be established both featured the members of the Elderhorst String Quartet: Messrs C.K. Elderhorst, J. Kornfeld, A. Hobday and W.E. Whitehouse. These players also featured in the performances for which advertisements are cited. Additional performers are listed below.
[no date] 1898: Second Concert, with Isidor Cohn (piano) and Clara Samuell (vocal).
[2 November 1898]: Third Concert, with Madame Alma Haas (piano), Herr A. Kummer (violin), Mr E. Shelton (viola), Mr Charles Ould (cello) and Mr Enes Blackmore (vocal), accompanied by Mr Hopkins Ould.
[9 November 1898]: Fourth Concert, with Mr Walter Ford (vocal), Madame Ethel Sharpe (piano), Claude Hobday (double bass), Manuel Gomez (clarinet), A. Borsdorf (horn), and E.F. James (bassoon). The programme includes an advertisement, with outline programme, for the fifth concert, given on 18 November by Margaret Barter, Muriel Foster, R.A. Streatfeild and Francis Harford (vocal) and Madame Adelina de Lara (piano).
[7 February 1899]: Second Concert, with Camille Chevillard (piano) and Achille Rivarde (violin), Arnold von Auen (vocal) and W.E. Whitehouse (cello), accompanied by Mr Hopkins Auld. The programme includes an advertisement, with outline programme, for third concert, given on 15 February by Miss Fanny Davies (piano), Messrs Marchand and Nemes (violin), Shelton (viola) and Parker (cello), with Miss Agnes Witting (vocal), accompanied by Mr Hopkins Ould.
[no date, 1899], Seventh Concert, with Leonard Borwick (piano), Mr Elderhorst (violin) and Whitehouse (cello), Miss Helen Trust (vocal) and Mr Hobday (viola).
