Collection name Cyril Eland collection: Salzburg 1 (1936-64)

Description A miscellaneous collection of handbills and programmes relating to musical activity in Salzburg between 1936 and 1964, particularly the concert and operatic performances given as part of the Salzburger Festspiele between 1936 and 1958. Also, prospectus and programmes for the Mozart Bicentenary celebrations of 1956 and a programme for a chamber performance in 1964.

All items are held loosely as the 16th box of the Cyril Eland collection (and the first of two boxes to contain material relevant to Salzburg).


1. Salzuburger Festspiele
- Festkonzert/Orchester-Konzert
All concerts were given by the Wiener Philharmoniker and were held, unless otherwise stated, at Festspielhaus. The programmes from 1936 and 1937 include some brief notes.
23 August 1936: no. 8, directed by Felix v. Weingartner.
8, 14 and 27 August 1937: nos. 4, 5 and 7, directed by Bruno Walter, Arturo Toscanini and Wilhelm Furtwängler. The performance on 8 August was held in the Mozarteum.
21, 25 and 30 August 1954: nos. 5, 7 and 8, directed by Dimitri Mitropoulos, George Szell, and Wilhelm Furtwängler.
5, 12, 15, 19, 22 and 26 August 1956: nos. 2-7, directed by George Szell, Karl Böhm, Dimitri Mitropoulos (nos. 4 and 5), Fritz Reiner and Rafael Kubelik. The performance on 5 August was held in the Mozarteum and that on 15 August at the Felsenreitschule.

- Domkonzert
Programmes and wordbooks for Domkonzert given by the Salzburger Domchor, directed by Joseph Messner, on 23 August 1936 (no. 5), 15 August 1937 (no. 4), 27 August 1954 (no. 4) and 24 August 1956 (no. 3). The 1956 concert was given in the Aula Academica rather than the Cathedral.

- Miscellaneous concerts
Any performance involving the Mozarteums-Orchester was directed by Bernhard Paumgartner. Where no other venue is cited below, the performances were held in the Mozarteums.
22 August 1936, Stiftskirche St. Peter: II. Kirchenkonzert, given by the Mozarteums-Orchester und Chor (with wordbook).
10 August 1937: Kammermusik-Serenade given by the Mairecker-Quartett (handbill).
11 August 1937, Stiftskirche St. Peter: Mozart, C-Moll Messe, given the Mozarteums-Orchester und Chor (with wordbook).
15 August 1937: Bach, Die Kunst der Fuge, arranged for two pianos by Erich Schwebsch and given by Heinz and Robert Scholz (with notes).
23 August 1954: Sechste Serenade given by the Mozarteum-Orchester (with notes).
21 and 29 August 1954 and 5, 12, 19 and 25 August 1956: Mozart-Matinee nos. 4-5 and nos. 3-6, given by the Camerata Academica des Mozarteums/Mozarteum-Orchester (with notes).
9 and 25 August 1956: Kammerkonzert (nos. 3 and 8), given by the Virtuosi di Roma/Zagreber Solisten

- Operatic performances
Programmes with notes for operatic performances given by the Wiener Philharmoniker and Chor und Ballett der Wiener Staatsoper (conductors/directors given in parenthesis). None of the programmes cite a specific date for the performance, although some are held with dated tickets.
1936: Mozart, Don Giovanni (Bruno Walter), Wagner, Die Meister Singer von Nurnberg (Arturo Toscanini) and Einar Nilson, Jedermann (Bernhard Paumgartner) (no notes for the last).
1937: Mozart, Don Giovanni (Bruno Walter), Die Zauberflöte (Arturo Toscanini) and La [sic] Nozze di Figaro (Walter); Beethoven, Fidelio (Toscanini); Verdi, Falstaff (Toscanini); Strauss, Elektra (Hans Knappertsbusch); Wagner, Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (Toscanini); Gluck, Orpheus und Eurydike (Bruno Walter); Einar Nilson, Jedermann (Bernhard Paumgartner) (no notes for the last).

2. Other Concerts.
Mozart Bicentenary in Austria 1956: prospectus, with programmes, plus a programme leaflet for Mozart, Mass in C minor, directed by Bernhard Paumgartner, given on 11 August 1956 at the Abteikirche zu St. Peter.

2 September 1964, Marmorsaal des Schlosses Mirabell: Salzburger Schloßkonzerte given by the Janacek [String] Quartett.
