Description A collection of programme books with words for the Crystal Palace Saturday Concerts seasons 1875-76 (nos.8-26, missing no.19) and 1876-77 (nos. 1-5), conducted by August Manns, held as individual items within the fifth of 29 boxes.

This box also includes the programme book for Mr Manns's Benefit Concert given at the same venue on 22 April 1876, conducted by Manns.

All programmes include words and historical and analytical notes, with musical examples, the majority by George Grove, some with annotations/corrections in his hand.


1875-76 season (nos. 8-18, 20-26)
20 November 1875: Miss Sophie Lowe and Madame Patey (vocal) with Madame Annette Essipoff (piano).
27 November 1875: Mademoiselle Carlotta Badia, Mademoiselle Antonietta Badia and Mr Edward Lloyd (vocal) with M. Mortier de Fontaine (piano).
4 December 1875: G. A. Macfarren, St. John the Baptist, given by Madame Lemmens-Sherrington, Madame Patey, Mr Wilford Morgan and Mr Wadmore (vocal), with the Crystal Palace Choir and Mr C. E. Willing (organ).
11 December 1875: Mademoiselle Ida Corani, Mr Edward Lloyd and Signor Foli (vocal) with Mr Henry Holmes (violin), including the first performance of H. Holmes, Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in F.
18 December 1875: Weber concert given by Madame Edith Wynne and Mr W. H. Cummings (vocal), with the Crystal Palace Choir, Mr Franklin Taylor (piano) and Mr W. Wooton (bassoon).
15 January 1876: Madame Osgood and Mr Edward Lloyd (vocal), with the Crystal Palace Choir and Mr Edward Deane (organ), including the first performance of E. Prout, Magnificat and the first English performance of Mendelssohn, Fugue in E flat, for strings.
22 January 1876: Miss Agnes Larkcom and Madame Antoniette Sterling (vocal) with Miss Marie Krebs (piano).
29 January 1876: Miss Sophie Löwe and Signor Foli (vocal) with Mr Oscar Beringer (piano).
5 February 1876: Madame Blanche Cole, Madame Patey, Mr Henry Guy and Mr Patey (vocal), with the Crystal Palace Choir and Mr E. Deane (organ).
12 February 1876: Madame Rose Hersee and Signor Foli (vocal) with Miss Agnes Zimmermann (piano).
19 February 1876: Mademoiselle Johanna Levier and Mr Shakespeare (vocal) with Miss Emma Barnett (piano).
4 March 1876: Mademoiselle Wilhelmine Gips and Mr George E. Fox (vocal) with Herr Joachim (violin), including the first performance of Schubert, Symphony in C. Inserted into this programme is an extract from The Examiner regarding this performance of the Schubert.
11 March 1876: Madame Lemmens-Sherrington and Mr Vernon Rigby (vocal) with Mr Dannreuther (piano), including the first English performance of Tchaikovsky, Concerto for Pianoforte and Orchestra in B-flat minor. Also, the first performance of Crowther-Alwyn, Song, 'Orpheus with his lute'.
18 March 1876: Miss Thekla Friedlander and Miss Annie Butterworth (vocal) with Herr Joachim (violin), including the first English performance of Rubinstein, Ballet Music and Wedding March (Feramors).
25 March 1876: Mademoiselle Johanna Levier, Miss Annie Butterworth, Mr Edward Lloyd and Signor Foli (vocal) with the Crystal Palace Choir.
1 April 1876: Madame Bianca Blume and Madame Patey (vocal) with Signor Piatti (cello), including the first performance of Alfred Holmes , Concert Overture, Les Muses. Also, the first English performance of Raff, Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra.
8 April 1876: Madame Osgood, Mr W. H. Cummings and Signor Foli (vocal), with the Crystal Palace Choir and Mr G. A. Clinton (clarinet).
15 April 1876: Mademoiselle Ida Corani and Mr Edward Lloyd (vocal) with the London Vocal Union, including the first English performances of Schumann, Festival Overture, with chorus on the Rhein-Wein-Lied and Brahms, Cantata, 'Rinaldo'.


1876-87 season (no. 1-5)
30 September 1876: Madame Sinico-Campobello and Signor Campobello (vocal) with Mr Fritz Hartvigson (piano).
7 October 1876: Miss Sophie Löwe and Mr Shakespeare (vocal) with Mr G. A. Clinton (clarinet).
21 October 1876: Madame Lemmens-Sherrington, Miss Bolingbroke and Mr Maybrick (vocal) with the Crystal Palace Choir, including the first English performance of Saint-Saens, Marche Heroique.
28 October 1876: Miss Mary Davies and Mr Barton McGucken (vocal) with Mons. Henri Wieniawski (violin).
14 October 1876: Miss Catherine Penna and Miss Enriquez (vocal) with Herr Wilhelmj (violin).

Collections Overview Founded in 1883, the RCM Library primarily supports the performance, study and research of RCM members. It is also open to the public for reference and research. It contains some 300,000 items, including significant collections of early printed and manuscript material from the 16th to 19th centuries, given to the College upon its foundation, specifically the Libraries of the Sacred Harmonic Society and of the Concerts of Ancient Music. Donations since have included autographs of composers of international renown, amongst them Beethoven, Chopin, Haydn, Mozart and Schubert, as well as manuscripts and archives of major British composers. Although a British bias is apparent, the collection also has significant German and Italian manuscripts and early printed holdings. Later acquisitions of printed music include large quantities of out-of-print material, and sizeable collections of performance sets. Audio-visual holdings and the RCM's own sound archive's are also extensive.
