Description
A collection of programme books for the Crystal Palace Saturday Concerts 1896-97 season (nos. 1-4, 6, 8-16 and 18-20), conducted by August Manns, held as individual items within the 26th of 29 boxes.
This box also includes a programme book for Mr Manns's Benefit Concert, given at the same venue on 16 April 1897 and for a series of Sacred Concerts given on 16 April 1897 (Good Friday).
All programmes include words and carry historical and analytical notes with musical examples, the majority by George Grove, some with annotations/corrections in his hand. Programmes also provide a list of the orchestral ensemble.
1896-97 season (nos. 1-4, 6, 8-16 and 18-20)
3 October 1896: Mr Barton McGuckin (vocal) and Herr Julius Klengel (cello).
10 October 1896: Miss Marie Brema (vocal) and Miss Muriel Elliot (piano), including the first English performance of Rimsky-Korsakoff, Suite of Characteristic Dancers from 'Mlada'.
17 October 1896: Miss Florence Christie (vocal) and Senor Sarasate (violin), including the first performance of W. Wallace, Symphonic Prelude, 'Amboss oder Hammer'.
24 October 1896: Miss Bertha Rossow (vocal) and Eugen d'Albert (piano).
7 November 1896: Mademoiselle Landi (vocal) and Mademoiselle Chaminade (piano).
21 November 1896: Berlioz, Faust, with Madame Clara Samuell, Mr Lloyd Chandos, Mr Watkin Mills and Mr A. H. Gee (vocal) and the Crystal Palace Choir.
28 November 1896: Miss Ella Russell (vocal) and Mademoiselle Kleeberg (piano), including the first English performance of R. Strauss, Symphony in F minor, op. 12.
5 December 1896: Miss Rina Allerton (vocal) and Mr Mark Hambourg (piano).
12 December 1896: Mademoiselle Jeanne Greta (vocal) and Mr Leo Stern (cello).
19 December 1896: Madame Marie Duma (vocal), Miss Fanny Davies (piano), Mr A. V. Belinski (violin) and Mr Albert Fransella (flute).
27 February 1897: Schubert programme, with Mademoiselle Margarethe Petersen, Mr Edward Lloyd and Mr Arthur Ferguson (vocal) and the Crystal Palace Choir.
6 March 1897: Mr H. Plunket Greene (vocal) and Fraulein Ilona Eibenschutz (piano), including the first English performance of R. Strauss, Thus Spake Zarathustra, op. 30.
13 March 1897: Mrs Hutchinson (vocal) and Joseph Joachim (violin), including the first performance of Hamish MacCunn, Highland Memories, Suite for Orchestra.
20 March 1897: Mademoiselle Martha Möller (vocal) and M. Paderewski (piano).
3 April 1897: Madame Medora Henson, Mr Edward Lloyd and Mr Andrew Black (vocal) and the Crystal Palace Choir, including Edward Elgar, Scenes from the Saga of King Olaf, op. 30 (conducted by the composer).
10 April 1897: Miss Hilda Wilson (vocal) and Herr Balling (viola-alta), including the first performance of Edward German, Suite, Romeo and Juliet.
17 April 1897: Miss Florence Salter and Miss Bertha Salter (vocal) and M. Siloti (piano).
Mr Manns's Benefit Concert
24 April 1897: Madame Albani and Mr Andrew Black (vocal), Madame Burmeister-Petersen (piano), Maud MacCarthy (violin) and the Crystal Palace Choir, including the first performance of Herbert Bunning, Dramatic Overture, 'Mistral'.

Collections Overview
Founded in 1883, the RCM Library primarily supports the performance, study and research of RCM members. It is also open to the public for reference and research. It contains some 300,000 items, including significant collections of early printed and manuscript material from the 16th to 19th centuries, given to the College upon its foundation, specifically the Libraries of the Sacred Harmonic Society and of the Concerts of Ancient Music. Donations since have included autographs of composers of international renown, amongst them Beethoven, Chopin, Haydn, Mozart and Schubert, as well as manuscripts and archives of major British composers. Although a British bias is apparent, the collection also has significant German and Italian manuscripts and early printed holdings. Later acquisitions of printed music include large quantities of out-of-print material, and sizeable collections of performance sets. Audio-visual holdings and the RCM's own sound archive's are also extensive.
