Description
A collection of programme books for the Crystal Palace Saturday Concerts 1887-88 season (nos. 1-2, 4-5, 7-10, 12-16 and 18-20), conducted by August Manns, held as individual items within the seventeenth of 29 boxes.
This box also includes the programme book with words for Mr Manns's Benefit concert, given at the same venue on 21 April 1888.
All programmes include words and carry historical and analytical notes with musical examples, the majority by George Grove, some with annotations/corrections in his hand. Programmes also provide a list of the orchestral ensemble.
1887-88 season (nos. 1-2, 4-5, 7-10, 12-16 and 18-20)
8 October 1887: Mademoiselle Elvira Gambogi (vocal) and Josef Hofmann (piano), including the first performance of George J. Bennett, New Concert-Overture in B flat, 'Jugendträume'.
15 October 1887: Mr Barton McGuckin (vocal) and Waldemar Meyer (violin), including the first performance of A. Goring Thomas, A New Suite of Ballet Airs.
29 October 1887: Mozart, Il Don Giovanni (100th anniversary of the first performance), with Miss Annie Marriott, Mademoiselle Elvira Gambogi, Miss Thudichum, Mr John Probert, Mr Frederick King, Mr Egbert Roberts and Mr Brereton.
5 November 1887: In Memoriam Sir George Alexander Macfarren, with Mrs Belle Cole (vocal) and César Thomson (violin).
19 November 1887: Mrs Henschel (vocal) and Franz Neruda (cello), including the first performance of Neruda, Concertstück for Violoncello and Orchestra, in C minor.
26 November 1887: Madame Nordica (vocal) and Madame de Pachmann (piano), including the first performance of Rubinstein, Eroica, Fantaisie pour Orchestre in F, op. 110.
3 December 1887: Mademoiselle Antoinette Trebelli (vocal), Alberto Geloso (violin), Mr G. A. Clinton (clarinet) and the Crystal Palace Choir.
10 December 1887: Mr Santley (vocal) and Bernhard Stavenhagen (piano).
11 February 1888: Mr Charles Banks (vocal) and Franz Ondricek (violin).
18 February 1888: Miss Thudichum and Mr Harper Kearton (vocal) with the Crystal Palace Choir, including the first performance of Hamish MacCunn, Ballad for Orchestra and Chorus, 'Lord Ullin's Daughter'.
25 February 1888: Madame Patey (vocal) and Fanny Davies (piano).
3 March 1888: Miss Liza Lehmann (vocal) and Miss Geraldine Morgan and Joseph Joachim (violin).
10 March 1888: Mademoiselle Louise Dotti (vocal), the London Vocal Union and the Crystal Palace Choir, including the first performance of F. Corder, Ballad, 'The Minstrel's Curse'.
24 March 1888: Miss Anna Russell (vocal) and Madame Norman-Neruda (violin).
31 March 1888: Miss Alice Gomez (vocal) and Miss Martha Remmert (piano).
7 April 1888: Madame Valleria (vocal) and Hans Wessely (violin), including the first performance of Dvorak, Symphony in F, no. 3, op. 76.
Mr Manns's Benefit Concert
21 April 1888: Nikita, Madame Carlotta Recoschéwicz and Carl Formes (vocal), Hans Wessely (violin) and Monsieur E. Gillet (cello).

Collections Overview
Founded in 1883, the RCM Library primarily supports the performance, study and research of RCM members. It is also open to the public for reference and research. It contains some 300,000 items, including significant collections of early printed and manuscript material from the 16th to 19th centuries, given to the College upon its foundation, specifically the Libraries of the Sacred Harmonic Society and of the Concerts of Ancient Music. Donations since have included autographs of composers of international renown, amongst them Beethoven, Chopin, Haydn, Mozart and Schubert, as well as manuscripts and archives of major British composers. Although a British bias is apparent, the collection also has significant German and Italian manuscripts and early printed holdings. Later acquisitions of printed music include large quantities of out-of-print material, and sizeable collections of performance sets. Audio-visual holdings and the RCM's own sound archive's are also extensive.
