Description
A collection of programme books for the Crystal Palace Saturday Concerts seasons 1881-82 (nos. 18-21 and 23-24) and 1882-83 (nos. 1-7, 9, 11-12, 14-15 and 17), conducted by August Manns, held as individual items within the twelfth of 29 boxes.
All programmes include words and carry historical and analytical notes with musical examples, the majority by George Grove, some with annotations/corrections in his hand.
1881-82 season (nos 18-21 and 23-24)
15 April 1882: Madame Sinico and Mr Henry Blower (vocal) with Madame Frickenhaus (piano), including the first English performance of Eduard Schütt, Concerto for Pianoforte and Orchestra in G minor, op. 7.
22 April 1882: Miss Mary Davies (vocal) and Mr Franz Rummel (piano), including the first English performance of Dvorak, Symphony in D, op. 60.
29 April 1882: Mrs Hutchison (vocal) and Madame Sophie Menter (piano), including the first orchestral performance of Gounod, Royal Wedding March.
6 May 1882: Herr Betz (vocal) and Mr Eugene d'Albert (piano).
27 May 1882: Herr Betz (vocal) and Mr Franz Rummel (piano).
3 June 1882: Madame Peschka-Leutner (vocal), Madame Sophie Menter (piano), the Crystal Palace Choir and the Band of the Scots Guards, including the first English performance of Berlioz, Grand Symphony, 'Funebre et Triomphale'.
1882-83 (nos. 1-7, 9, 11-12, 14-15 and 17)
14 October 1882: Mr Edward Lloyd (vocal) and Mr Oscar Beringer (piano), including the first English performance of Brahms, Concerto for Pianoforte and Orchestra, no. 2 in B flat, op. 83.
21 October 1882: Miss Ella Lemmens (vocal) and Madame Ida Bloch (piano), including the first English performance of Raff, Symphony No. 6 in D minor, op. 189.
28 October 1882: Mademoiselle Carlotta Badia (vocal) and Mr Carrodus (violin), including the first English performance of Goldmark, Ballet Airs from 'Die Königin von Saba'.
4 November 1882: Mrs Hutchinson, Miss Marian Fenna and Mr Edward Lloyd (vocal), with the Crystal Palace Choir and Mr Alfred J. Eyre (organ).
11 November 1882: Miss Mary Davies (vocal) and Miss Marie Wurm (piano), including the first English performance of Smetana, Symphonic Poem, 'Vysehrad'.
18 November 1882: Madame Howitz (vocal) and Mademoiselle Janotha (piano).
25 November 1882: Mr Maas (vocal) and Miss Arma Harkness (violin).
9 December 1882: Mademoiselle Elly Warnots (vocal) and Miss Arma Harkness (violin).
10 February 1883: Madame Patey (vocal) and M. Louis Breitner (piano).
17 February 1883: E. Prout, Alfred, with Miss Annie Marriott, Mr Vernon Rigby and Mr Bridson (vocal) and the chorus of the Hackney Choral Association, conducted by the composer.
3 March 1883: In Memoriam Richard Wagner, with Miss Anna Williams (vocal), including the first English performance of Charfreitags-Zauber from Parsifal.
10 March 1883: Joseph Joachim (violin) and Herr Krause (viola).
31 March 1883: Madame Rose Hersee (vocal) and Senor Sarasate (violin).
