Description
A collection of programme books for the Crystal Palace Saturday Concerts seasons 1880-81 (nos. 20-23) and 1881-82 (nos. 1-12 and 14-16), conducted by August Manns, held as individual items within the eleventh of 29 boxes.
This box also includes programme books for Mr Manns's Benefit Concert (30 April 1881) and a Special Saturday Concert (21 May 1881), also conducted by Manns.
All programmes include words and carry historical and analytical notes with musical examples, the majority by George Grove, some with annotations/corrections in his hand.
1880-81 season (nos. 20-23)
2 April 1881: Miss Edith Santley and Mr F. King (vocal) with Herr Joachim (violin).
9 April 1881: Mademoiselle Louise Pyk (vocal) and Monsieur Tivadar Nachez (violin).
16 April 1881: Madame Lemmens-Sherrington (vocal) and Herr Waldemar Meyer (violin), including the first English performances of Liszt, Symphonic Poem, 'The Ideal' and Ph. Rüfer, Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, op. 33.
23 April 1881: Miss Annie Marriot, Miss Orridge, Mr Frank Boyle and Mr Frederick King (vocal), with the Crystal Palace Choir and Herr Waldemar Mayer (violin).
1881-82 season (nos. 1-12 and 14-16)
15 October 1881: Miss Robertson and Miss Fanny Robertson (vocal), including the first English performance of Gounod, Ballet Airs, 'Le Tribut de Zamora'.
22 October 1881: Madame Schuch-Proska (vocal), including the first performance of F. H. Cowen, Characteristic Overture, 'Niagara'.
19 November 1881: Mr Edward Lloyd and Mr Frederic King (vocal), the Crystal Palace Choir and Mrs Bucknall-Eyre and Mr A. J. Eyre (piano) with Mr Henry Forrester (reader).
26 November 1881: Madame Crewe-Riechelmann (vocal) and Mademoiselle Janotha (piano).
3 December 1881: Miss Annie Marriott and Miss Edith Millar (vocal) and Miss Agnes Bartlett (piano).
10 December 1881: Miss Anna Williams (vocal) and M. Marsick (violin).
17 December 1881: Miss Mary Davies (vocal) and M. Marsick (violin), including the first performance of H. Leslie, New Symphony in D minor (conducted by the composer). Inserted in this programme is a press cutting regarding the Leslie work.
18 February 1882: Miss Mary Davies and Mr W H. Brereton (vocal) with Miss Agnes Zimmermann (piano), including the first English performance of C. Villiers Stanford, Selection from 'The Veiled Prophet'.
25 February 1882: Madame Patey (vocal) and Robert Hausmann (cello).
11 March 1882: Miss Carlotta Elliott (vocal) and Madame Norman Neruda (violin).
18 March 1882: Mrs Hutchinson and Miss Hope Glenn (vocal) with Dr. Joachim (violin).
25 March 1882: Mr Edward Lloyd (vocal) and Miss Marie Krebs (piano).
Mr Manns's Benefit Concert
30 April 1881: Mademoiselle Mantilla, Miss Hope Glenn and Signor Perugini (vocal), with Mademoiselle Babette Lobach (violin) and Mr Franz Rummel (piano), including the first English performances of Brahms, Academic Festival Overture and Rossini, Petite Polka Chinoise.
Special Saturday Concert
21 May 1881: Mrs Hutchinson and Signor Foli (vocal) with Mr Franz Rummel (piano), including the first English performances of Rubinstein, Symphony No. 5 in G minor, op. 107 and Grieg, Concerto for Pianoforte and Orchestra in A.

Collections Overview
Founded in 1883, the RCM Library primarily supports the performance, study and research of RCM members. It is also open to the public for reference and research. It contains some 300,000 items, including significant collections of early printed and manuscript material from the 16th to 19th centuries, given to the College upon its foundation, specifically the Libraries of the Sacred Harmonic Society and of the Concerts of Ancient Music. Donations since have included autographs of composers of international renown, amongst them Beethoven, Chopin, Haydn, Mozart and Schubert, as well as manuscripts and archives of major British composers. Although a British bias is apparent, the collection also has significant German and Italian manuscripts and early printed holdings. Later acquisitions of printed music include large quantities of out-of-print material, and sizeable collections of performance sets. Audio-visual holdings and the RCM's own sound archive's are also extensive.
