Collection name Charles Winterbottom collection: volume 3 (1884)

Description A miscellaneous collection of programmes for performances given at various London venues and in Salisbury and Glasgow in 1884, held as the third of five volumes comprising the collection of the double bass player Charles Winterbottom, all five volumes of which are contained within a single box.

Also, handbills for the Concert Symphonique given under the direction of Ed Colonne in La Salle du Theatre of the Cercle d’Aix-les-Bains from 3 July to 29 September 1884 (37 performances).

1. London venues
Clapham Hall
25 January, 1 April and 27 November 1884: Clapham Amateur Orchestral Society 9th season nos. 2 and 3 and 10th season no. 1, conducted by Mr Ammon Winterbottom (with words and a list of the orchestral ensemble).

St. James's Hall
21 February, 6 and 20 March, 23 April, 7 and 28 May 1884: Philharmonic Society of London 72nd season concert nos. 1-6 (handbills for nos. 1-5 and an Analytical Programme for no. 6, including words, historical and analytical notes, musical examples and a list of the orchestral ensemble).
22 February, 4 April and 21 November 1884: Sacred Harmonic Society (handbills).

Royal Albert Hall
10 November 1884: Wagner, Festival Drama Parsifal (first English performance), given by the Royal Albert Hall Choral Society, conducted by Mr Barnby (handbill).

Theatre Royal, Covent Garden
28 October 1884: Promenade Concert, conducted by Mr A. Gwyllym Crowe (with words).


2. Provincial venues
Glasgow, St. Andrew's Halls
5, 12, 19 and 26 January, 2 and 9 February and 13, 20 and 27 December 1884: Saturday Popular Concerts given by the Glasgow Choral Union conducted by F. H. Cowen (20 December only) and August Manns (with words and notes). Also, a programme (with words and notes) for a Grand Popular Ballad and Orchestral Concert given by the same performers on 1 January 1884.
6 February 1884: First Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers, Concert and Presentation of Prizes (with words).

Salisbury, Assembly Rooms
22 April 1884: Sarum Choral Society 1st concert (with list of the orchestral ensemble).
