Collection name Carl Newton collection: Orchestral Programmes (1877-9)

Description A miscellaneous collection of analytical programmme books for orchestral performances given at St. James's Hall, London, Guildhall, Cambridge and Town Hall, Birmingham between 1877 and 1879, held as a bound volume.

All documents include historical and analytical notes (the majority with musical examples) and provide the texts for the vocal pieces where appropriate. With the exception of that for the final Viard Louis concert, all programmes also carry a list of the orchestral ensemble.

- St. James's Hall, London
26 November and 17 December 1878 and 21 January, 18 February and 23 April 1879: Madame Jenny Viard-Louis' Grand Instrumental and Vocal Concerts (second season), including a large number of works receiving their first performance, either in England or in London.
25 February 1879, [no venue]: Mr Walter Bache's Fifteenth Annual Concert.
29 June 1878: New Philharmonic Concert (27th season, no. 5), given with Miss Elene Webster and Mademoiselle Eugenia Paprini (vocal), Mr Alfred Jaell (piano) and Monsieur Henri Wieniawski (violin), conducted by Dr Henry Wylde and Mr Ganz.

- Guildhall, Cambridge
22 May and 3 December 1877 and 21 May 1878: Cambridge University Musical Society nos. 152, 154 and 157. The concert on 22 May included the first performance of C. Villiers Stanford, 46th Psalm (op. 8) and the first English performance of Brahms, Rhapsodie for Alto Solo and Chorus of Male Voices, op. 53. That on 21 May included the first English performance of Kiel, Requiem, op. 20.

- Town Hall, Birmingham
6 March 1879: Mr Stockley's Second Subscription Orchestral Concert, with Miss Emma Beasley and Mr Barton McGuckin (vocal) and Herr Daubert (cello), accompanied by Mr R. M. Winn and conducted by Mr Stockley, including the first performance of a 'New Song' by A. R. Gaul.

Note: this volume is incorrectly labelled 'Orchestral Programmes 1878-9'.
