Collection name Carl Newton collection: Orchestral Concert Programmes (1905-11)

Description A complete sequence of programme books for the 19th to 24th seasons of concerts given by the Scottish Orchestra at McEwan Hall, Edinburgh between 1905 and 1911, held as three bound volumes.

Each season consisted of 12 performances, with one Extra Concert added in some cases (see below). Unless otherwise stated, these were two-part orchestral performances, including a number of pieces noted to have been receiving their 'first performance in Edinburgh'.

All programmes carry historical and analytical notes (the majority with musical examples) and texts for any vocal pieces. They also include a list of the orchestral ensemble and many provide photographs of the principal performers.

Unless otherwise stated below, the concerts were conducted by Dr Frederic Cowen (1905-10) and Mr Emil Mlynarski (1910-11).

Volume 2 (1907-09)
Programmes for the 21st and 22nd seasons, including an Extra Concert on 30 December 1907. The programme for 3 February 1908 includes a historical essay entitled 'Twenty-One Years: A Retrospective', whilst those for the 22nd season begin to introduce biographical notes.

Programmes for the 23rd and 24th seasons, with an additional programme for Herr Ernst Denhof's Operatic Festival Performances (in English) of two complete cycles of Wagner, The Ring of the Nibelung, given between 28 February and 12 March 1910 at the King's Theatre, Edinburgh, in conjunction with the Royal Carl Rosa Opera Company and featuring the Scottish Orchestra.
